Poly(viny1 alcohol) (PVAL) samples partially functionalized with 4-nitrophenyl carbonate groups were obtained by reaction of PVAL with 4-nitrophenyl chloroformate using pyridine as a catalyst. 2-Amino-2-deoxy-~-glucose (glucosamine) was virtually quantitatively bound to PVAL activated with 4-nitrophenyl carbonate groups. Glucosamine-carrying PVAL (PVAL-G) and Concanavalin A (Con A) in phosphate buffer (pH 7,2) at room temperature were proven to interact with each other.
