La pobreza es un tema social con diversas aproximaciones desde la academia para soportar la formulación de políticas públicas y económicas. Objetivo. Identificar estrategias para disminuir la pobreza en zonas rurales con la incorporación del comercio justo. Metodología. Se recurrió al método de casos a partir del análisis de las etapas de creación, desarrollo y evolución de cooperativas de productores bananeros del departamento del Magdalena (Colombia). La recolección de datos se hizo mediante encuestas, entrevistas y visitas de campo a través de un enfoque interdisciplinar (historia empresarial, economía, ciencias sociales). Resultados. A partir del análisis de los casos se obtuvo que, de las seis cooperativas analizadas, dos nacen motivadas por los pequeños productores y las restantes surgen como adaptación a las exigencias del mercado. Conclusión. Se concluye que efectivamente el comercio justo ha sido un aporte importante en la reducción de la pobreza en las zonas rurales estudiadas.
