The use of microstructural characteristics as a quality control tool has been increasingly employed in iron ore agglomeration processes. In the production of the pellets, phase identification for specific sintering condition is of prime importance in understanding the basis for the production and the required properties. The application of a methodology involving optical and electron microscopy applying the electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) technique opened a broad possibility to combine the routinely use of the optical microscope with the powerful EBSD tool in order to establish a base for the relationship between heat-treated pellet microstructural features and cold crushing strength. The optical images is the starting point and reveal the general aspects of the aggregate such as porosity, the iron oxide phases and the sintering stage of the ferritic matrix. The use of the scanning electron microscope equipped with the EBSD has a twofold purpose. First for the usual magnification which has a deep observation of the pore space and the microstructure at a submicron scale. The first results from the conjoined application of these techniques show that the cold crushing strength of the pellet increase with the decrease of porosity, the appearance of the fayalite, as well as the presence of magnetite-unoxidized.
The objective of this paper is to review some of the basic properties of polyester adhesives, the types of bonds that can be made with them, and some of their more important end-use applications. In general, these polymers are crystallizable tere phthalate copolyesters containing one or more dibasic acids and one or more glycols. They have melting points ranging from about 100 to 130°C, will crystallize from the melt in from less than one to more than 10 min, and have melt viscosities ranging from about 35,000 to 300,000 cp at application temperature. Fabric bonds made with polyester adhesives generally have good resistance to laundering and to dry cleaning. These low-melting polyesters are readily used for the bonding of nonwoven fabrics based on several types of staple fibers and can also be spun into melt-blown web form. Uses for the nonwoven webs and melt-blown webs include the lamination of foam, scrim, vinyl, paper, glass, and carbon substrates as well as commercial substrates containing polyester polyamide, or celluslosic fibers.
