Although one of the main promises of aspect-oriented (AO) programming techniques is to promote better software changeability than objectoriented (OO) techniques, there is no empirical evidence on their efficacy to prolong design stability in realistic development scenarios. For instance, no investigation has been performed on the effectiveness of AO decompositions to sustain overall system modularity and minimize manifestation of ripple-effects in the presence of heterogeneous changes. This paper reports a quantitative case study that evolves a real-life application to assess various facets of design stability of OO and AO implementations. Our evaluation focused upon a number of system changes that are typically performed during software maintenance tasks. They ranged from successive re-factorings to more broadly-scoped software increments relative to both crosscutting and non-crosscutting concerns. The study included an analysis of the application in terms of modularity, change propagation, concern interaction, identification of ripple-effects and adherence to well-known design principles.
Objective: To estimate the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in an asymptomatic population in the state of Sergipe, Brazil.
Methods: This cross-sectional study with stratified sampling (sex and age) includeD serological immunofluorescent tests for IgM and IgG on samples from 3 046 asymptomatic individuals. Sample collection was performed in wet-markets of the 10 most populous cities of Sergipe, Brazil. Exclusion criteria included symptomatic individuals and health workers. The presence of comorbidities was registered.
Results: Of the 3 046 participants, 1 577 (51.8%) were female and 1 469 (48.2%) were male; the mean age was 39.76 (SD 16.83) years old. 2 921 tests were considered valid for IgM and 2 635 for IgG. Of the valid samples, 347 (11.9% [CI 10.7%–13.1%]) tested positive for IgM and 218 (8.3% CI 7.2%–9.4%]) tested positive for IgG. Women over 40 had the highest prevalence for IgM (group C, p=0.006; group D p=0.04). The capital Aracaju displayed the highest prevalence for both antibodies; 83 (26.3% [CI 21.6%-31.6%]) tested positive for IgM and 35 (14.6% [CI 10.4%-19.7%]) for IgG. The most prevalent comorbidities were hypertension (64/123 individuals) and diabetes (29/123).
Conclusions: A high prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies was found among asymptomatic persons in Sergipe. Women over 40 showed the highest rates. The capital, Aracaju, displayed the highest seroprevalence. Surveys like this one are important to understand how the virus spreads and to help authorities to plan measures to control it. Repeated serologic testing are required to track the progress of the epidemic.
Objective. To evaluate the effect of using a virtual patient software program to improve pharmacy students' knowledge of and attitudes toward geriatric patients. Methods. The Virtual Patient for Geriatric Education (VIPAGE) software program was used in two Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharm) degree programs in Brazilian universities. The virtual consultations were divided into an initial evaluation, care plan, letter of referral to another professional, and evaluation of follow-up. Each weekly session lasted two hours. Students answered questionnaires before and after using the virtual patient software relating to the following: demographics, geriatric experiences, Geriatric Attitudes Scale, and the Facts on Aging Quiz. Results. Of the 128 students who completed the baseline questionnaires, 109 students also completed the second questionnaire. The mean Geriatric Attitudes Scale score before the intervention was 3.7 (SD50.8) and after was 3.9 (SD50.7). Significant improvements in Geriatric Attitudes Scale scores after using the virtual patient software were seen in students who were male, whose grandparents were still alive, or whose parents were elderly, who had frequent contact with the elderly, who did not have frequent contact with the elderly, and who did not have professional contact with the elderly. The average score on geriatrics knowledge was 44.7 (SD512.0) before completing the virtual patient consultations and 52.6 (SD511.9) after. The mean score measuring students' lack of geriatrics knowledge was 27.3 (SD515.8) before and 19.1 (SD512.8) after using the software. Conclusion. Completing virtual patient consultations using the VIPAGE software positively impacted pharmacy students' geriatrics knowledge and attitudes.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
