RESUMOA cana-de-açúcar é a principal cultura utilizada na produção de etanol biocombustível no Brasil e sua colheita pode ser feita com ou sem queima das folhas, aumentando ou diminuindo a emissão de gases do efeito estufa e a deposição de C no solo. Por meio deste trabalho, avaliou-se o efeito de sistemas de colheita de cana-de-açúcar (com e sem queima da palha, com um, três e seis anos após a última reforma do canavial) sobre os teores e estoques de C no solo, a qualidade física da matéria orgânica e a imobilização de C na biomassa microbiana do solo. As áreas de colheita sem queima apresentaram maior teor de C na camada superficial e maiores estoques de C, independentemente do tempo após a última reforma. Diferenças na qualidade física da matéria orgânica ocorreram principalmente na fração com tamanho entre 53 e 75 µ µ µ µ µm, na qual a proporção de C foi maior nas áreas sem queima. Na camada de 0-10 cm, o sistema sem queima apresentou maior teor de C microbiano. A colheita sem queima da palha é eficiente em acumular C em formas que possuem alto tempo de residência no solo.Termos de indexação: aquecimento global, cana crua, fracionamento físico, manejo do solo, matéria orgânica do solo.

Resumo -O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o desempenho produtivo e qualitativo da cana-de-açúcar (Saccharum spp.), irrigada por gotejamento subsuperficial com efluente de estação de tratamento de esgoto (EETE). Testaram-se lâminas de irrigação entre 0, na testemunha sem irrigação, e 200% da evapotranspiração máxima da cultura, em dois ciclos de cultivo de cana soca, adubada com metade da quantidade recomendada de nitrogênio (N). A produtividade, em cada ciclo, foi ajustada a um modelo que considera a produtividade da cana planta como covariável. Por esse modelo, os ganhos em produtividade, proporcionados pela reposição da evapotranspiração com EETE, foram de 17,13 e 25,76 Mg ha -1 . A aplicação de 200% de EETE resultou no ganho estimado de 19,84 Mg ha -1 na primeira soca e 40,47 Mg ha -1 na segunda. Houve redução de sólidos solúveis do caldo da cana, com o uso da irrigação na primeira soca. No entanto, outros parâmetros indicativos da qualidade industrial não foram significativamente alterados pela irrigação. A irrigação com EETE proporciona ganhos de produtividade da cana-de-açúcar e reduz a adubação nitrogenada recomendada no cultivo da primeira e segunda socas.Termos para indexação: Saccharum, adubação nitrogenada, gotejamento subterrâneo, reuso de água. Sugarcane yield and quality under irrigation with sewage treatment plant effluentAbstract -The objective of this work was to evaluate the productive and qualitative performance of sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) irrigated by subsurface chip irrigation with sewage treatment plant effluent (STPE). Irrigation depths were tested between 0% (control, without irrigation) and 200% of crop maximum evapotranspiration, in two ratoon cycles fertilized with half the recommended amount of nitrogen (N). The productivity, in each cycle, was fitted to a model which considers the plant yield as covariable. By this model, productivity gains provided by the replacement of crop evapotranspiration by the irrigation with STPE were: 17.3 and 25.76 Mg ha -1 . The 200% STPE application resulted in a estimated gain of 19.84 Mg ha -1 at the fisrt ratoon cycle and of 40.47 Mg ha -1 at the second. Soluble solids were reduced in sugarcane juice with the irrigation use in the first ratoon cycle. However, other industrial quality parameters were not significantly affected by irrigation. The irrigation with STPE promotes sugarcane productivity and reduces the N fertilization requirement of the first and second ratoon cycle.

Soil organic matter (SOM), which influences chemical, physical and biological soil attributes, is the main form of C found in the soil which can also be used as a soil sustainability index. The aim of this study was to use the quantity and quality of SOM as an indicator to determine the sustainability of different land uses (native vegetation, secondary vegetation, fruit orchards, horticultural areas, degraded pasture, improved pasture, and fields with annual crops) in the eastern Amazon. Improved pasture had higher soil C stock than the other land uses and was similar to the native vegetation, and also presented the highest quantity of C in a stable form in the soil (fraction < 53 µm). According to the C management index, improved pasture is the most similar in use to native vegetation. Changes in land use reduced the soil microbial C content, although the more conservationist systems (fruit orchards, secondary vegetation, and improved pasture) had contents similar to those of the native vegetation. The highest soil microbial quotients were found in fruit orchards and horticultural areas. Well-managed pastures were effective in accumulating C as stable forms in the soil, which demonstrates the sustainability of this land use in the region studied.

Chemical fertilizing is one of the main inputs that increase watermelon production costs. Watermelon grafting with compatible rootstocks and a vigorous root system may increase the efficiency of nutrients absorption. This study aimed at determining the accumulation of dry matter and nutrients, as well as the agronomic performance of grafted watermelon. The triploid 'Precious Petite' watermelon was used as graft and the Line BGCIA941 (Citrullus lanatus var. citroides) as rootstock. The experimental design consisted of randomized blocks, in a split-plot, with six replicates. The 'Precious Petite' grafted onto Line BGCIA941, ungrafted 'Precious Petite' and ungrafted Line BGCIA941 were evaluated in the plot, while the subplot corresponded to the sampling time (0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 and 70 days after transplanting). 'Precious Petite' grafted onto Line BGCIA 941 accumulated more macro and micronutrients than the ungrafted plants, increasing fruit yield, flesh firmness and rind thickness, but it did not affect the soluble solids contents. The decreasing order for nutrient accumulation in the grafted plants was N > K > Ca > Mg > P > S > Fe > Mn > Zn > B > Cu, whereas for ungrafted 'Precious Petite' it corresponded to N > K > Ca > Mg > P > S > Mn > Fe > B > Zn > Cu.
