ABSTRACT. The objective of this study was to evaluate the agronomic characteristics of corn seed inoculated with Azospirillum brasilense, grown on black oat and ryegrass straw, and managed under different grazing strategies and doses of nitrogen. The experiment was conducted in Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, during two agricultural seasons (2012/2013 and 2013/2014) in a randomized, complete block design with three replications. In the winter period, black oat and ryegrass straw were managed at different grazing heights by sheep (0.30, 0.20, 0.10 m, conventional grazing, and no grazing) with three doses of nitrogen (0, 50, and 100 kg ha The height of corn plants was greater when they were grown on black oat and ryegrass straw, and the absence of grazing favored productivity. Under drought conditions, the application of nitrogen to the pasture favored corn development, increasing plant height, ear height, and stem diameter. Inoculation with A. brasilense had a positive effect on the characteristics of yield and productivity of corn, independent of growing season and hybrid used.

Modelagem. Simulação. Zea mays L. ESTIMATING THE NEED FOR NITROGEN IN THE PRODUCTION OF GRAIN AND SILAGEABSTRACT -The modeling for agriculture is a mathematical tool that allows us to weigh the effects of factors, environmental or management on crop productivity. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of mathematical models, in the estimation of the productivity of maize over the need for nitrogen fertilization. Estimates of nitrogen fertilization were performed to obtain the potential productivity and depleted grain yield and silage corn genotypes. The Model 1 was based on estimates obtained in the literature and Model 2 on estimates generated by the proposed alternative model, calibrated with data observed in the experiment. To evaluate the performance of the models we used statistical indicators, such as Pearson correlation coefficient, Willmott agreement index, the performance index of Camargo, percentage deviation and medium square error. Recommendations of nitrogen generated by the models for the potential productivity and depleted much grain as silage were higher compared with the recommendations of the culture ways. The AG30A91 genotype had a higher leaf area index, reflecting higher estimates of potential productivity and depleted grain and silage. The model 2 can be used to estimate the yield of grain and silage and the need for simu...

Animal performance in oat and Italian ryegrass pastures under leaf lamina biomass levelsAbstract -The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of different leaf lamina biomass over animal performance. A mixture of oat (Avena strigosa Schreb) and Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) was used to determine adequate levels of leaf lamina biomass for pasture management. , being classified as low, medium and high, respectively. Grazing method was continuous, with variable stocking rate; testing animals were calves of Charolais breed and its crosses with Nelore breed, with initial age of nine months. Evaluated variables in animal production, in both years, were: average daily gain, stocking rate and live weight gain per area. Leaf lamina biomasses evaluated are not limiting factors to animal performance.
ABSTRACT. Animal production and sward structure of a natural grassland pasture under different management systems. This study was accomplished at the Fundação Estadual de Pesquisa Agropecuária (Fepagro) in São Gabriel, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, with the aim of evaluating the performance of ewes with lambs in a natural grassland pasture under three management systems. The evaluated treatments were: improved natural grassland with the introduction of cool-season species under rotative grazing (PNMR); natural grassland under continuous grazing (PNC); and natural grassland under rotative grazing (PNR). The treatments were distributed into a totally randomized design, with two replicates of each area. The experimental period lasted from November 1 st to December 23, 2004, and the grazing animals used were ewes with lambs (males and females) of the Corriedale breed. There was no difference in average values of pasture growth rates and total production of DM among treatments. The average forage allowances of 20.3 and 22.1% of live weight in PNMR and PNR, respectively, were superior to the 13.7% of live weight in PNC. No significant difference among treatments was observed for the values of DLG (Daily Live weight Gain) for male and female lambs, with similar performance in all three evaluated systems.
