Cet article vise à contribuer à la réflexion sur l’introduction de questions socialement vives dans l’enseignement de la géographie. Ce questionnement s’insère dans la lignée des recherches sur la fonction des « éducations à… » et sur le rôle de l’introduction de controverses dans l’enseignement. Cet outil didactique met l’élève dans la condition d’établir des choix afin de prendre position sur une situation controverse donnée. Cela implique de tenir compte de la dimension spatiale de la controverse choisie, tout comme de prendre en considération les différentes issues des choix à disposition. Cela demande la mobilisation des outils de la pensée spatiale et ceux de la pensée critique, instruments indispensables pour une citoyenneté dynamique, c’est-à-dire en évolution et liée à des choix. L’analyse des données collectées montre le potentiel de cet instrument dans ce domaine et permet de comprendre l’importance d’une géographie qui favorise la formation de jugements critiques.
