Abstract: This paper concerns the process of urbanization that the West of Mexico has undergone, as indeed has Latin America in general, following the changes in economic relations worldwide induced by the endless globalization of various production and consumption activities in different countries. The process called globalization has led to a reconfiguration of the tendencies involved in urbanization, which is no longer linked to population growth as the principal factor determining the growth of cities. Technological progress and the orientation of production to international trade have been important factors in bringing about these changes, as they have modified the geographical disposition of industry and of services within specific territories.
