OBJECTIVES:The pharmacological effects of methylprednisolone (MP) and ganglioside gM-1 on spinal injuries have been thoroughly investigated, but only a few studies have evaluated the interaction between these two drugs. METHODS: Twenty-four Wistar rats were subjected to contusive injury of the spinal cord produced by the NYU system. These animals were divided into four groups: group I was injected with MP; group II was injected with gM-1; group III was injected with MP together with gM-1; and group control received physiological serum. The animals were evaluated with regard to their recovery of locomotive function by means of the BBB test on the second, seventh and fourteenth days after receiving the contusive injury to the spinal cord. They were sacrificed on the fourteenth day. RESULTS: This study demonstrated that the MP and gM-1 groups presented functional results that were better than those of the control group, although the enhanced recovery of group II (gM-1) relative to the control group was not statistically significant (p>0.05). The most notable recovery of locomotive function was observed in the group that received MP alone (p<0.05). The group that received MP together with gM-1 presented results that were better than those of the control group (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: Administration of methylprednisolone alone or with gM-1 was shown to be effective for recovery of locomotive function. Combined administration of these drugs resulted in better outcomes than administration of methylprednisolone alone.

Objective : To develop a consensus for translation of the most relevant terms used in the study of Adult Spinal Deformity, from their original languages into Brazilian Portuguese. Methods : A panel of 12 experts in spine surgery from the five Brazilian regions was constituted. To obtain the standardization of terminology, the Delphi method with an electronic questionnaire was administered to participants about their opinion on the translation of 13 relevant terms chosen by literature review. Each term was considered standard when there was consensus, that is, concordance higher than 80% among participants as to the suggestion to be adopted, and then on the acceptance of the term and its abbreviation in Portuguese. Results : Initially there was consensus (over 80% concordance) on the translation of seven terms in the electronic questionnaire. The other six terms that have not reached consensus were discussed at a meeting among the participants, relying on the opinion of a specialized professional in simultaneous translation of orthopedic terms in Portuguese and other professional majored in Portuguese language. It was decided how these terms should be translated and there was a consensus among all participants regarding their acceptance. Finally, there was consensus among the participants, who agreed with the translation and abbreviation of the 13 propose terms, defining its standardization for Brazilian Portuguese. Conclusion : We present a standard terminology used in the study of Adult Spinal Deformity through consensus among experts, seeking uniformity in the use of these terms in Brazilian Portuguese.

Objective To describe the epidemiology and mortality of thoracolumbosacral arthrodesis surgery in Brazil in the last 10 years. Methods Study conducted using data from the SIH of the Unified Health System (SUS) covering the time period from 2008 to 2018 for all regions of Brazil. The data obtained were analyzed using the BioStat 5.3 program, using Chi-square statistical tests, observing a p-value <0.05 and a 95% confidence interval. Results A total of 66,631 anterior or posterior approach TLS surgeries were registered. The overall mortality rate was 9.37 deaths per thousand procedures. There are regions with mortality much higher than the national average. The mortality rate increases proportionally with the number of levels involved in posterior arthrodesis. Conclusions The study of the epidemiological profile of thoracolumbosacral arthrodesis is important, especially in a country whose population is heterogeneous but has different mortality rates among regions. Therefore, it is necessary to create measures that identify and prevent the factors that lead to the death of patients undergoing such a procedure. Objective: To analyze the occurrence of notified cases of bone tuberculosis in Brazil during the period from 2009 to 2018. Methods: Quantitative, descriptive and retrospective study. The data consisted of cases reported to the Notifiable Diseases Information System (SINAN) of DATASUS. To analyze the results, the non-parametric statistical Chi-squared and G tests, capable of expressing statistical associations, were used. Results: 6,442 cases of bone tuberculosis were reported in Brazil, with an average of 644.2 cases per year. The Southeast was responsible for 41.5% of the cases (n = 2676). The extrapulmonary form accounted for 87.9% (5661). There was a predominance in males (66.1%, n = 4258), Whites (41.6%, n = 2678) and in the above 35 years of age group (73.9%, n = 4757). In the data collected, the risk factor data was not correctly filled out, making reliable statistical associations impossible in this study, mainly between alcoholism, tobacco use, AIDS, diabetes, mental illness, illicit drug use and homelessness. Conclusion: There was greater notification of cases of bone tuberculosis in the Southeast and Northeast regions of Brazil, which predominantly affected young, economically productive men. Tuberculosis has a correlation with diabetes, HIV / AIDS, smoking and alcohol and drug use, according to the results of this study.
