Autor rekonstruuje dzieje Polskiego Towarzystwa Księgarń Kolejowych „Ruch”, funkcjonującego w Krakowie w latach 1918-1939, założonego przez znamienitego księgarza Jakuba Mortkowicza i Jana Gebethnera; z czasem do przedsiębiorstwa przystąpili inni udziałowcy – indywidualni i instytucjonalni. W obszernym studium Autor przedstawia początki i szybki rozwój firmy (już w 1926 r. „Ruch” miał 246 księgarń kolejowych), jej działalność, w tym m.in. kolportaż prasy, sprzedaż książek, działalność reklamową i wydawniczą, a także udział spółki w działaniach powodujących ograniczenia wolności prasy, w tym w zwalczaniu periodyków narodowych i komunistycznych po 1926 r. tj. po przewrocie majowym marszałka Józefa Piłsudskiego. W zakończeniu Autor zwraca uwagę, że w ciągu 20 lat swojego istnienia „Ruch” wykonał wielką pracę mającą na celu uporządkowanie polskiego rynku prasy i książki. Miał też olbrzymie zasługi w propagowaniu czytelnictwa w społeczeństwie, w istocie „krzewił oświatę” zwłaszcza wśród ludności wiejskiej. Był jedną z „bardzo nielicznych firm dla których ostateczny wynik finansowy nie był jedynym motorem działania”.
