ObjectiveTo assess the association between quality of stimulation in the family environment and child's cognitive development considering the impact of mother's schooling on the quality of stimulation. Methods A cross-sectional study comprising 350 children aged 17-42 months was carried out in central and peripheral areas of Salvador, Northeastern Brazil, in 1999. A socioeconomic questionnaire was used, along with the Home Observation for Measurement of the Environment Scale (HOME Inventory), and the Bayley Scale for Infant Development. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were carried out through linear regression at 5% level of significance. ResultsThere was a positive (β=0.66) and statistically significant association between quality of stimulation in the family environment and child's cognitive development. Part of the effect was mediated by the mother's working circumstances and educational level. It was verified that a better quality of stimulation is provided for those who come early in the birth order in family, and live with only a few others under five years of age. This pattern of stimulation is better among children who live with their parents and whose mothers have better education, have a job and a partner involved in the family environment. Conclusions Quality of stimulation in the family environment is crucial for child's cognitive development, besides the significant role of the available resources and family dynamics. The study findings show the pertinence to cognitive development of interventions which improve the quality of the environment and the child-caregiver relationship.
RISK, PROTECTION AND RESILIENCE IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTSABSTRACT. Risk, protection and resilience are current issues in mental development researches. Risk factor concept is already well Risk, protection and resilience are current issues in mental development researches. Risk factor concept is already well delimited, but protection factors and resilience are still mixed. Risk factors are related to environmental variables that increase the probability of bad consequences in development. On the other hand, the protection factors are associated to individual resources that decrease the risk effects, while resilience is usually related to individual protection factors that predict positive consequences in individuals exposed to an environment of risk. This paper shows how some studies describe those issues (risk, protection and resilience), pointing factors that can make an individual more or less vulnerable to risk, and also, the way some can be resilient when facing the adversities. That is, how some children and adolescents can overcome all the risk factors they have been exposed to and still develop as expected.
A b s t r a c t Objective: To examine the concurrent and criterion validity of the Autism Behavior Checklist (ABC). Methods: Three groups, comprising 38 mothers of children previously diagnosed with autism (DSM IV-TR, 2002), 43 mothers of children with language disorders other than autism, and 52 mothers of children who had no linguistic or behavioral complaints, were interviewed. In order to minimize the effect of maternal level of education, the questionnaire was completed by the researcher. To determine the concurrent validation, ANOVA and discriminant analysis were used. The ROC curve was used to establish the cutoff score of the sample and to examine the criterion validity. Results: The mean total score was significantly higher in the group of mothers of autistic children than in the other groups. The ABC correctly identified 81.6% of the autistic children. The ROC curve cutoff score was 49, and the sensitivity was 92.1%, higher than the 57.89% found when a cutoff score of 68 was used. The specificity was 92.6%, similar to the 94.73% obtained with a cutoff score of 68. Conclusions: The ABC shows promise as an instrument for identifying children with autistic disorders, both in clinical and educational contexts, especially when a cutoff score of 49 is used.
In the present study, the practices and knowledge of 40 physicians and 40 nurses from municipal health care units (UMS) and 40 physicians and 40 nurses from the Family Health Program (FHP) in Belém, Pará State, Brazil, all of whom working in primary health care, were evaluated in relation to child development surveillance. Measures of knowledge of child development showed an average of 63.7% correct answers for UMS physicians, 57.3% for FHP physicians, 62.1% for FHP nurses, and 54.3% for UMS nurses. Only 21.8% of mothers attending appointments mentioned that the health care professional had asked about their children s development, 27.6% of mothers reported that the health care professional had asked about or observed the child s development, and 14.4% mothers reported having received instructions on how to stimulate their children s development. According to this study, primary health care physicians and nurses in the municipality of Belém showed gaps in their knowledge of child development. Child development surveillance is not being conducted satisfactorily in primary health care in the municipality of Belém. It is thus necessary to raise the awareness of health care professionals concerning the problem and provide them with appropriate training.
ObjectiveTo assess the receptive vocabulary of children aged between two years and six months and five years and eleven months who were attending childcare centers and kindergarten schools. Methods An analytical cross-sectional study was carried out in the municipality of Embu, Southeastern Brazil. The Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test and analysis of factors associated with children's performance were applied. The sample consisted of 201 children of both genders, aged between two and six years. Statistical analysis was performed using multivariate analysis and logistic regression model. The dependent variable analyzed was test performance and the independent variables were child's age, mother's level of education and family socio-demographic characteristics. Results It was observed that 44.3% of the children had performances in the test that were below what would be expected for their age. The factors associated with the best performances in the test were child's age (OR=2.4; 95% CI: 1.6-3.5) and mother's education level (OR= 3.2; 95% CI: 1.3-7.4). Conclusions Mother's education level is important for child's language development. Settings such as childcare and kindergarten schools are protective factors for child development in families of low income and education.
