This work aimed to determine whether a minimum provision of marine oil in practical diets for Litopenaeus vannamei is required when replacing fish meal (FM) by soy protein concentrate (SPC). The study consisted of three growth experiments conducted in 500-L tanks with 70 shrimp m À2 . In experiment #1, FM was progressively replaced by SPC as fish oil (FO) levels increased with a consistent input of whole squid meal (WSM). In experiment #2, FM was replaced by SPC under two levels of FO (10 or 20 g kg À1 ) without the presence of a feeding effector. In experiment #3, three dietary levels of krill meal (KRL) and WSM (5, 10 and 20 g kg À1 ) were included in a basal diet containing SPC and low levels of FM. Results showed that under a clear-water condition, the dietary levels of FO in practical diets for L. vannamei have a significant impact on the amount of FM that can be replaced by SPC. As much as 31% replacement of FM/SPC was possible with 20 g kg À1 FO. Whenever dietary fat was adjusted by using FO as a lipid source, complete replacement of FM by SPC was achieved with no negative effect on shrimp growth.

O objetivo do presente estudo foi determinar a exigência protéica e correspondente relação energia/proteína em dietas para alevinos de piracanjuba, Brycon orbignyanus. Seis dietas semi-purificadas isocalóricas foram formuladas para conter 3.000 kcal de energia metabolizável (EM)/kg e concentrações de proteína bruta (PB) de 24, 26, 29, 32, 36 e 42%. Para essas concentrações, as relações E/P das dietas foram de 12,3; 11,6; 10,4; 9,2; 8,5 e 7,1 kcal EM/g PB, respectivamente. As fontes de proteína, lipídios e carboidratos digestíveis foram, respectivamente, caseína/gelatina, óleo de fígado de bacalhau/óleo de soja e dextrina. Após condicionamento de cinco dias, as dietas foram fornecidas, até a saciedade, em duas alimentações diárias, a 162 alevinos (27 peixes/dieta), que apresentaram 8,38 ± 0,09 g de peso médio inicial, distribuídos em 18 tanques de fibra-de-vidro de 100 L, conectados a um sistema de recirculação de água. A temperatura média da água foi de 26,3°C, com extremos de 23,7 e 30,2°C. Após 90 dias, a concentração de proteína na dieta que proporcionou ganho em peso máximo aos peixes foi 29% PB, com relação E/P igual a 10,4 kcal EM/g PB. As dietas com concentrações de PB iguais a 32, 36 e 42% não se mostraram superiores para conversão alimentar, taxa de eficiência protéica, valor produtivo da proteína e retenção de energia bruta. A deposição corporal de proteína e gordura não sofreu influência da concentração de PB da dieta

A 90‐day feeding experiment was conducted with sex reversed Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) fingerlings fed purified or practical diets supplemented with different zinc sources to evaluate fish growth performance and zinc and iron retention in fish bones, fillets, liver, skin and eyes. The relative bioavailability value (RBV) of zinc in the supplemental sources tested was also calculated. Fish were fed with isonitrogenous and isoenergetic purified or practical diets supplemented with 150 mg Zn kg−1, as zinc sulphate monohydrate (ZnSO4), zinc oxide (ZnO) or zinc amino acid complex (Zn‐AA). The feeding trial was conducted in 30, 50 L aquaria where four 0.66 ± 0.01 g (mean ± SD) fingerlings were initially stocked. No significant differences were observed for any growth performance variables (P > 0.05). In practical diets, only ZnSO4 and ZnO presented bone zinc retention similar to that for the standard zinc source. Zinc concentration in the bone of fish fed practical diet supplemented with Zn‐AA (171 ± 3.62 μg g−1) was significantly lower than that verified for the practical diets supplemented with the standard zinc source (200 ± 17.7 μg g−1) or with ZnSO4 (204 ± 19.9 μg g−1). Assuming the concentration of zinc in bones as the response criterion, the supplemental zinc RBV from ZnSO4 (105%) was higher than the RBV for Zn‐AA (95.1%) or ZnO (94.9%). Iron concentration in the bones of animals fed the non‐zinc‐supplemented purified diet was significantly higher than that observed for purified diet supplemented with Zn‐AA (P < 0,05). The results of the present work allowed us to conclude that ZnSO4 in relation to ZnO or Zn‐AA was the supplemental zinc source with higher zinc bioavailability to Nile tilapia.

The present work aimed at studying the growth performance and feeding preference of Litopenaeus vannamei juveniles fed on diets supplemented or not with Spirulina meal. Litopenaeus vannamei juveniles (3.89 AE 0.25 g) were stocked for 72 days in 28 round 500-L tanks at 44 shrimp/tank (77 juveniles/m 2 ). The diets were supplemented with 0.5% of a commercial feed attractant (C25 and C50) or with Spirulina meal (S25 and S50). In C25/S25 and C50/S50 there were reductions of 25% and 50% in ¢shmeal inclusion level respectively. In a further study, two feeding trays with di¡erent diets were allowed to shrimp at the same moment and they were located in opposite walls of the tank. The feed remains in each feeding tray were collected and weighted to calculate the dry feed remains. The weekly growth rate of shrimp fed on S25 (0.89 AE 0.03 g) was not signi¢cantly di¡erent from those fed on C25 (0.89 AE 0.01g). The attractiveness experiment showed that S25 was preferred signi¢cantly more by shrimp than C25. In conclusion, Spirulina meal added at 0.5% in a complete diet for L. vannamei juveniles, with 14% of Peruvian ¢shmeal, has proved itself as a nutritionally e⁄cient feeding attractant.
