Introdução: O enfisema subcutâneo ocorre quando ar comprimido é introduzido em tecidos moles dos planos faciais através de uma barreira intrabucal descontinuada e, embora rara na clínica odontológica, tem sido associado a alguns casos em consequência de tratamentos dentários, como extração de terceiros molares e tratamento endodôntico. O diagnóstico precoce e o manejo correto são fundamentais para a prevenção da progressão da lesão e de futuras complicações, sabendo que o enfisema pode se espalhar pelos profundos planos faciais do pescoço, ocasionando enfisema retrofaríngeo e, ainda, adquirir potencial de causar pneumotórax e pneumomediastino. Objetivo: Avaliar a ocorrência de enfisema subcutâneo no Estado do Rio Grande do Sul. Metodologia: O estudo será realizado através de um questionário enviado por e-mail aos profissionais especialistas em Cirurgia e Traumatologia Buco-maxilo-faciais, Periodontia e Endodontia registrados no CRO-RS, contendo 8 perguntas: especialidade, conhecimento em relação ao enfisema subcutâneo e causa, número de cirurgias realizadas mensalmente, instrumento mais utilizado para procedimento cirúrgico, instrumento envolvido nos casos conhecidos ou presenciados de enfisema, instrumento utilizado para secagem dos canais radiculares no caso de endodontia, se já possuiu paciente com enfisema subcutâneo e se ouviu falar sobre enfisema durante a prática clínica. Resultados: Foram enviados 1954 questionários (488 para periodontistas, 859 endodontistas e 607 cirurgiões buco-maxilo-faciais), obtendo 260 respostas dentro dos critérios da pesquisa (13,3%). A grande maioria da amostra (89,1%) relatou ter conhecimento sobre enfisema subcutâneo e suas complicações e 28 (10,4%) profissionais já tiveram casos de enfisema subcutâneo relacionado a procedimentos odontológicos. Conclusões: O conhecimento por parte dos profissionais da área da odontologia sobre enfisema subcutâneo é importante, pois a partir desse estudo observamos que, apesar de raro, 10,7% dos entrevistados já tiveram casos de enfisema subcutâneo relacionado à procedimentos odontológicos.
