This paper describe a weakly supervised solution for detecting stance in tweets, submitted to the SemEval 2016 Stance Task. Our approach is based on the premise that stance can be exposed as positive or negative opinions, although not necessarily about the stance target itself. Our system receives as input ngrams representing opinion targets and common terms used to denote stance (e.g. hashtags), and use these features, together with the sentiment detection solutions, to automatically compose a large training corpus. Then, it applies a supervised learning algorithm to develop a stance prediction model.
Bovine herpesvirus 1 (BoHV-1) and 5 (BoHV-5) are important pathogens of the respiratory and genital tract of cattle and may also affect the central nervous system and cause meningoencephalitis. Both virus types are estimated to be widely distributed in Southern Brazil. In the present study, BoHV-1 and/or BoHV-5 DNA were detected in bovine semen samples from two states of Brazil by two species-specific nested polymerase chain reactions (nPCRs). These nPCRs were used to assay 53 samples of fresh semen and 23 samples of frozen semen from breeding bulls. Viral DNA was detected in all 76 semen samples: all were positive for BoHV-5, whereas 34 of these were positive for BoHV-1 as well. Moreover, in five fresh and in 13 frozen semen samples-of a total number of 40 samples suitable for virus isolation-infectious BoHV-1 and/or BoHV-5 virus were detected. In conclusion, that both BoHV-1 and BoHV-5 were detected in bovine semen in Brazil highlighted the importance of examining bull semen in search for both agents to reduce the risk of transmitting these viruses.
Purpose. To investigate the diagnostic accuracy of machine learning classifiers (MLCs) using retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and optic nerve (ON) parameters obtained with spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). Methods. Fifty-seven patients with early to moderate primary open angle glaucoma and 46 healthy patients were recruited. All 103 patients underwent a complete ophthalmological examination, achromatic standard automated perimetry, and imaging with SD-OCT. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were built for RNFL and ON parameters. Ten MLCs were tested. Areas under ROC curves (aROCs) obtained for each SD-OCT parameter and MLC were compared. Results. The mean age was 56.5 ± 8.9 years for healthy individuals and 59.9 ± 9.0 years for glaucoma patients (P = 0.054). Mean deviation values were −1.4 dB for healthy individuals and −4.0 dB for glaucoma patients (P < 0.001). SD-OCT parameters with the greatest aROCs were cup/disc area ratio (0.846) and average cup/disc (0.843). aROCs obtained with classifiers varied from 0.687 (CTREE) to 0.877 (RAN). The aROC obtained with RAN (0.877) was not significantly different from the aROC obtained with the best single SD-OCT parameter (0.846) (P = 0.542). Conclusion. MLCs showed good accuracy but did not improve the sensitivity and specificity of SD-OCT for the diagnosis of glaucoma.
613Pesq. Vet. Bras. An outbreak of polioencephalomalacia in cattle caused by ingestion of high sulphur diet, in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil is described. One group of 30 calves was kept in Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) pasture and supplemented with concentrate and minerals. Six calves died, necropsy was performed in two of them and liver samples (for lead determination) and fragments of central nervous system were collected. Clinical and neurological examination was performed in one calf and confirmed brain involvement. Sulphur content on dietary components and water, ruminal hydrogen sulfide production in five calves of the same group and PCR from formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded cerebral tissues to detect bovine herpesvirus 5 DNA was perfomed. The total sulphur intake was 0.38% dry matter and the values of ruminal sulfide concentration ranged from 1,000 to 2,500ppm. Lead It was not detected in the liver samples and PCR was negative for bovine herpesvirus 5. The brain lesions were characterized by laminar neuronal necrosis. The clinical signs of cerebrocortical syndrome associated with high ruminal sulfide values, elevated intake of dietary sulphur and histological lesions confirmed that the excess of sulphur caused the polioencephalomacia in these calves.INDEX TERMS: Cerebrocortical necrosis, diagnostic, ruminal hydrogen sulfide.
