Este estudo avalia a aplicação de equipamentos poupadores, em edifícios verticais, visando minimizar o impacto da demanda de água gerada, em um horizonte de cinco anos, no bairro do Catolé, em Campina Grande -PB. Investiga-se a redução do consumo de água a partir da utilização de mecanismos poupadores em edifícios residenciais, com o intuito de estabelecer parâmetros para a construção de novas edificações. Espera-se que estes parâmetros possam servir de suporte ao planejamento urbano, auxiliando no estabelecimento de meios de incentivo para minimizar o consumo de água. Para tanto, são selecionados cinco tipos de mecanismos poupadores e avaliados os custos de implantação e a eficiência dos mesmos. O consumo de água é simulado para edifícios em construção e são gerados cenários, utilizando os mecanismos poupadores, com a finalidade de verificar o quanto a utilização desses equipamentos contribuiria para a redução da demanda de água. Os resultados indicam que a utilização dos equipamentos poupadores reduz em 83,26% o consumo final de água em edifícios verticais. Conclui-se que é possível minimizar o problema da escassez da água, utilizando instrumentos de gerenciamento que contribuam para a racionalização do uso, visto que ações de responsabilização da sociedade pelo consumo consciente dos recursos naturais têm se mostrado eficazes, pois agregam, consequentemente, qualidade às áreas urbanas.
