O presente artigo, visa por meio da utilização de conceitos e categorias sociológicas, compreendercomo a região amazônica é um locus de ação da lógica capitalista/modernizante há décadas e comoisso se faz presente ainda hoje a partir do uso de novas estratégias e linguagens, na tentativa deescamotear as reais intenções e resultados advindos destas ações. Nesse sentido, a observação daatual condição do projeto/processo de repavimentação da estrada que liga Manaus a Porto Velho, aBR-319, se mostra um espaço privilegiado no sentido da compreensão e dos resultados dessas ações.Para tanto, a abordagem metodológica é teórica e qualitativa. Assim, primeiro o artigo se debruçasobre dois conceitos sociológicos centrais para tal empreitada. Por meio dos escritos de José deSouza Martins busca-se, demonstrar como a BR-319 pode ser entendida como um clássico espaçode fronteira. Já Anibal Quijano nos ajuda a compreender os processos de colonialidade expressosnesses projetos modernizantes. Passada a compreensão conceitual, o artigo se utiliza de dadossecundários sobre a estrada, desde artigos jornalísticos, científicos, documentos dentre outros para,numa articulação entre a condição histórica e contemporânea de duas comunidades do eixo daestrada - Vila de Realidade e a Comunidade de São Sebastião do Igapó Açu. Esse esforço serve parademonstrar como certas condições históricas e sociais, mesmo que atualizadas para as demandasdiscursivas atuais, se mantêm e se reproduzem na realidade amazônica brasileira contemporânea.
