AbstractMobile devices with touchscreen are on the hands of all. Or rather, nowadays our hands mirror smartphone. It is difficult to imagine the daily lives without a connected cell phone and its different APP. In the same sense that the emergence of compass and other drawing resources changed the way we construct and conceptually understand a particular mathematical object, dynamic mobile environments are bringing for learning nowadays. In this article I bring ideas from the field of cognition, language, and neuroscience to show how they can guide researches with touchscreen devices. I articulate some of these ideas to examples focused on ways of turning on a screen or with the device itself. The article highlights the manipulations on screen as one more dimension of embodied cognition. It also emphasizes the need to include in the semiotic bundle (writing, speech, inscriptions, constructions on screen, etc.) this new form of interaction and manifestation and appropriation of language.
By bringing contributions from cognitive science and neuroscience, this article enhances the gestures approach including, manipulations on mobile devices as a new way of communicating and thinking. The paper reflects on the cognitive and linguistic implications that smartphones or tablets can bring to learning in general and mathematical education in particular. Both thinking and mathematics are dynamic. Through two examples from daily life, I advocate the need to understand the development of mathematical thinking as a conjunction of touchscreen, gesture, speech, dragging, writing, pictorial-register, etc. Taking into account the context of production, this bundle has a significant role in the linguistic-cognitive spectrum of humans.
Palavras-chave: materiais curriculares educativos online, Educação Básica, formação continuada de professores, reflexão docente Abstract: This article stems from a research project that aims at the making and availability of online educational curriculum materials (OECM) for the use of teachers in their lessons. The analyzed data were gathered in a research off-line session during which the mathematics teachers had the opportunity to access and surf in each of the different materials. The data gathering was done through both a guideline of questions and the researchers' diaries. Some of the first results confirm that tasks have to be the starting point in the elaboration of an OECM. Besides being one more strategy for the learning of teachers, we believe that OECM can become new forms of obtaining online data for research in the education of mathematics aiming teaching professional development. Nevertheless, the availability of OECM alone cannot account for any improvement in the quality of mathematics teaching and learning processes.
ResumoOs recursos informáticos continuam crescendo e trazendo desafios a educação. Abstract A mathematics at the fingertips with touchscreen devicesComputing resources continue to grow and bringing challenges to education. The continuous development of digital mobile technologies provides innovations in pedagogical practices and promotes reflection on the impacts of changes. This article is part of a research interest in the use of devices with touchscreen manipulation directed to the processes of teaching and learning mathematics, particularly in geometry. We will present a survey of touchscreen devices and the first results of activities development in the two software: Geometric Constructer (GC) and Sketchometry, conducted from November 2012 to October 2013, focused on the description and nature of these devices. We found that the applications (APPs) are of two types: software and games. We chose to work with software because they provide environments with free resources for geometric constructions. This study serves as a starting point that can help teachers and researchers interested in the inclusion of touchscreen devices in new educational practices.
