RESUMOEste estudo procurou analisar o padrão do movimento fundamental caminhar como subsidio para o entendimento da aquisição das habilidades motoras na infância. O número de sujeitos do estudo constituiu-se de 41 crianças de idade entre 3 e 8 anos, pertencentes à rede privada de ensino. Como instrumentos foram utilizadas a abordagem da configuração corporal total e a cinemetria. Os resultados demonstraram que: a maioria das crianças apresentou estágio evoluído do caminhar; as variáveis espaçotemporais apresentaram comportamento típico em função da velocidade normalizada, com acentuações positivas para a velocidade livremente selecionada, o comprimento da passada, a cadência do passo e o comprimento do passo, e negativas para o tempo da passada. As velocidades normalizadas se diferenciam em função do tipo de estágio de desenvolvimento motor. Conclui-se que o estágio maduro evidenciou-se como essencial para velocidade normalizada (0,37) do caminhar, destacando-se como pré-requisito para movimentos mais precisos e coordenados.
