Resumo: O desenvolvimento da cárie dentária não depende apenas da presença de microrganismos na cavidade bucal, mas também está relacionado com a dieta alimentar, higiene bucal, susceptibilidade do hospedeiro, fator socioeconômico, dentre outros. Objetivou-se investigar a prevalência de cárie dentária em crianças em condição de vulnerabilidade social no município de Crato, CE. Para tanto foi realizado um estudo descritivo de caráter transversal com dados quantitativos. A população do estudo foi composta por crianças de 5 a 13 anos atendidas pelo projeto social Verde Vida no ano de 2018. A coleta de dados procedeu-se através de questionário, seguida pela realização de exame clínico bucal para construção dos índices CPOD e ceo-d. Foi avaliada uma amostra de 52 crianças de ambos os sexos, sendo que 01 possuía dentição decídua, 21 dentições permanentes e 30 apresentavam dentição mista. O CPOD variou entre 0 e 12 e o ceo-d entre 0 e 13, com a média de CPOD e ceo-d igual a 2,17 e 4,77, respectivamente. O número de dentes hígidos oscilou entre 11 e 28, e o total de dentes decíduos presentes na boca de 0 a 20 e a prevalência de cárie dentária encontrada foi de 92,31%. Foi observada uma alta prevalência de cárie dentária na população avaliada, porém os CPO's médios encontrados não se apresentaram muito discrepantes com os achados em nível territorial brasileiro.Abstract: The development of dental caries does not depend only on the presence of microorganisms in the oral cavity, but is also related to a diet, oral hygiene, susceptibility to hosting, socioeconomic factor, among others. The objective was to investigate the prevalence of dental caries in children in conditions of social vulnerability in the city of Crato, CE. Therefore, a cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out with quantitative data. The study population consisted of children from 5 to 13 years of age with a social project Vida Verde in 2018. A data collection processed through a questionnaire, followed by a clinical oral exam to construct DMFT and CEO-d. A sample of 52 children of both sexes was evaluated, of which 01 had primary dentition, 21 permanent teeth and 30 had wrong teeth. The DMFT varied between 0 and 12 and the CEO between 0 and 13, with an average DMFT and CEO equal to 2.17 and 4.77, respectively. The number of healthy teeth fluctuated between 11 and 28, and the total of primary teeth present in the mouth from 0 to 20 and the prevalence of dental caries found was 92.31%. A high prevalence of dental caries was observed in the evaluated population, however the CPO means found were not very discrepant with the findings at the Brazilian territorial level.
