El artículo intenta presentar el papel de la instrucción en la conciencia de los valdenses que llegaron como inmigrantes al Uruguay desde mediados del siglo XIX. Según personajes de esas décadas como el Pastor Daniel Armand Ugon y otros, éste es un asunto de “vida o muerte”; se trata de encontrar la manera de conservar las tradiciones y cultura que habían llevado al Uruguay desde los valles del Piamonte.
Como en todo el continente latinoamericano, a finales del siglo 19 las nuevas generaciones intelectuales del Uruguay buscaban una salida del pensamiento de las décadas anteriores, marcadas por la influencia del positivismo. José Enrique Rodó y Julio Herrera y Reissig representan con sus obras maestras Ariel y Tratado de la imbecilidad del país, respectivamente, dos polos aparentemente opuestos. En el presente artículo se presentarán estas dos reacciones a la crisis del positivismo resaltando las diferencias y similitudes entre los dos intelectuales uruguayos tal vez los más destacados del cambio de siglo, que en sus obras, y pese a las diferencias estilísticas y de metodología, plantean un afán civilizador que difiere menos de lo que sugiere su primera lectura.
A LeEl campo menos analizado de la obra de José Enrique Rodó es el de su actuación política y principalmente el de su actuación parlamentaria que no se puede separar de toda su obra por la unidad de sus ideas. Todo lo expresado en sus escritos políticos y en sus discursos parlamentarios completan lo expuesto en sus grandes obras, como -por ejemplo-en Ariel * .En 1900 publica Ariel, que reeditado en poco tiempo en el Uruguay, más tarde tuvo otras ediciones en el extranjero, hasta ilegales también (en México). Sobre este hecho escribe a Pedro Henríquez Ureña el 28 de noviembre de 1908: "No hay motivo para que usted me explique en su carta por qué no se ha solicitado mi autorización. No era necesaria: todo lo que yo escriba pertenece a ustedes." 1 .Una de las opiniones de Rodó sobre la política en general, que caracteriza toda su actuación política fue la que pronunció ya al fin de su última legislatura en el Parlamento Uruguayo, el 28 de junio de 1913: "...las cuestiones políticas son, ante todo, cuestiones humanas..." 2 , y más abajo sigue: "la política consiste en encarnar el hecho actual como tal hecho, y en buscarle solución, con la mirada fija en el porvenir." 3 . Como veremos, a pesar de su desilusión por la situación política del Uruguay de su época, Rodó siempre guardó cierto optimismo y creyó en un futuro mejor.Rodó en la política de su país aparece incorporado al Partido Colorado que en esta época era el representante de las ideas liberales, de los intelectuales y, en cierta medida, el partido de la población de Montevideo.Según Gustavo Gallinal (escritor, docente y político uruguayo) la actuación política de Rodó fue "En su actuación destacada y gallarda, en la arena política, había recibido alguna profunda herida, exacerbada luego en el largo combate. La resolución que lo llevó a bajar, muy joven, a mezclarse en el tumulto de la vida pública, obedeció a un impulso reflexivo, tendiente a realizar una doble aspiración: una aspiración de cultura armónica y de vida integral. Vivir la vida en su plenitud, ensueño y acción, ¿no es éste uno de los consejos de Próspero, junto a la estatua de Ariel?" 4 . Rodó y la situación política de su paísEl Uruguay en los primeros años del siglo XX todavía vivió varios levantamientos y confrontaciones armados, que afectaron profundamente a Rodó, en sus escritos políticos * Últimamente se realizó un coloquio sobre los cien años de Ariel, en la Unversidad Erlangen-Nürnberg.
