In dem Betrag wird zunächst gezeigt, dass in den letzten zwei Jahrzehnten – trotz eines generell zu attestierenden Logozentrismus in den Sozialwissenschaften im Allgemeinen und der sozialwissenschaftlichen Jugendkulturforschung im Besonderen – Forschende sich zunehmend mit visuellen Daten beschäftigen. Nicht zuletzt vor dem Hintergrund der verschieden akzentuierten »Turns« hat eine stärkere Berücksichtigung von Visualität eingesetzt und eine methodologische Debatte begonnen, die Methodenausarbeitungen zur Analyse stiller und bewegter Bilder nach sich gezogen hat. Einige dieser Entwicklungen werden im Forschungsfeld zu visueller Jugendkulturforschung aufgezeigt. Dabei wird auf die Notwendigkeit einer eingehenden Beschäftigung hingewiesen, da jugendkulturelle Lebenswelten durch Bildströme geprägt sind, die durch neuere Medien zur bildbasierten Rezeption, Distribution und Produktion entstehen. Im Anschluss daran werden Grundzüge der Audiovisuellen Grounded-Theory-Methodologie (AVGTM) als ein neuer Analyseansatz umrissen und Überlegungen zu Sampling, Datenaufbereitung und Kodierung veranschaulicht.
Weil sich jugendliche Lebenswelten permanent verändern, hat sich die zuständige Jugendkulturforschung immerzu neuen Herausforderungen zu stellen. Angesichts der Verbreitung neuerer Medien zur Rezeption, Distribution und Produktion visueller Daten sind zunehmend systematische Analysen in diesem Bereich gefordert. Entsprechend begann sich im zurückliegenden Jahrzehnt ein neues Forschungsfeld in der Jugendkulturforschung zu konturieren, in dem visuelle Daten untersucht werden. Zur Darstellung sich bereits abzeichnender Themen und Methoden stellen wir einige Studien zu stillen und bewegten Bildern vor, um dann spezieller auf den Ansatz der Audiovisuellen Grounded-Theory-Methodologie (AVGTM) zu fokussieren, den wir im Rahmen eines laufenden Forschungsprojekts anhand der Analyse von HipHop-Videos entwickeln.
