However, such herbicides might persist on the soil for a long period causing phytotoxicity on susceptible rice grown in succession. The objective of this work was to determine the effect of different soil tillage systems during the off-season on the residual phytotoxicity of imazethapyr and imazapic on non tolerant rice. Herbicide residues caused phytotoxicity on susceptible rice with the highest values being registered 25 days after emergence and decreasing after this period until almost disappearing 60 days after emergence. Herbicide residues affected plant stand, number of stems per m 2 , number of panicles per m 2 and plant height, but did not affect grain yield. Soil movement decreased herbicide activity on the superficial soil layer (0-3 cm).
The present work aimed to evaluate plant injury caused by residues in the soil of the formulated mixture of imazethapyr and imazapic to a nontolerant genotype of rice (IRGA 417) drilled at 371 and 705 d after herbicide application (DAA). Herbicide carryover reduced up to 55% of the grain yield of the IRGA 417 drilled at 371 DAA, and plant injury was still evident at 705 DAA but without grain yield reduction.
Palavras-chave: degradação, fotólise, hidrólise, mecanismo de ação, persistência, sorção.ABSTRACT -The herbicides of the imidazolinone group control a wide range of weed species. They are absorbed by weed roots and leaves and transported through the phloem and xylem, accumulating in the plant growing points. They inhibit the enzyme acetolactate synthase (ALS), which synthesizes the branched chain amino acids. When used in the field, a large portion of these herbicides reach the soil, where they can be absorbed by the roots of plants, sorbed into the soil colloids, or dissolved in soil solution, going through photolysis, hydrolysis, microbial degradation or leaching. The sorption of imidazolinone is faster and affects other processes. High contents of clay, organic matter and pH lower than 6.0 contribute to enhance the sorption and persistence of imidazolinones in soil. The most important way of dissipation is by microbial degradation, thus conditions favoring microbial development will also enhance imidazolinone degradation.

-The use of urea coated with urease inhibitor may become a useful tool for increasing the efficiency of nitrogen top-dressing in rice crop, thereby reducing nutrient losses through volatilization of NH 3 (ammonia). Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the volatilization of NH 3 and the response of rice to the use of urea coated with urease inhibitor in two cropping systems, no-tillage and conventional. For this purpose, field experiments were developed in the agricultural years 2007/2008 and 2008/2009, in UFSM in Santa Maria-RS. The design was randomized blocks in bifactorial scheme (2x5) with two sources, urea and urea + NBPT and five intervals of water intake (0; 3; 6; 9; 12 days) after application of nitrogen sources. The results of two seasons show that the urease inhibitor present in urea slows and decrease the conversion of N to NH 3 , reducing the losses by volatilization, compared to urea without inhibitor. Among the systems, the losses are magnified in the no-tillage cropping system. The behavior of the response variable in relation to productivity is variable in two cropping systems used in this study and the stress caused to the rice plant by the late start of the irrigation is more damaging than the losses caused by the volatilization of NH 3 .Key words: Rice cultivation. Urease inhibitor.
Rice is a cold-sensitive crop, and its exposure to low-temperature stress, during germination and early seedling growth, can negatively affect the initial stand establishment. Substances that act as growth regulators can be used to mitigate this initial stress. Thus, the influence of gibberellic acid, thiamethoxam and a phytohormone was investigated at the growth variables and antioxidant enzyme activity of the 'Irga 424' and 'Puita Inta CL' rice cultivars, at low-temperature (17 ºC). The products act on the germination percentage of 'Puita Inta CL', but vigor is only influenced by giberellic acid. Giberellic acid influences shoot length, irrespective of cultivar, while thiamethoxam and the phytohormone only affect length in 'Puita Inta CL'. The antioxidant activity depends on the cultivar and organ tested (shoot or root). These products mitigate the effects of cold, thereby preventing the formation of reactive-oxygen species and lipid peroxidation, and positively influence the superoxide dismutase enzyme activity.
