En este estudio se evaluó la calidad postcosecha de frutos de pitahaya (Hylocereus undatus Haw.) cosechados en tres estados de madurez: inicial, medio y completo, con 25-50, 50-75 y 75-100 % de color rojo en la cáscara, respectivamente. Los frutos fueron almacenados a 20 ± 2 °C. Se evaluaron características físicas y químicas durante 12 d y las fisiológicas por 8 d. La pérdida de peso al concluir el almacenamiento fue mayor (P ≤ 0.05) en frutos de madurez inicial (7.8 %) que con madurez media (6.1 %) y completa (5.6 %). El color de la cáscara varió (P ≤ 0.05) durante el almacenamiento y entre estados de madurez. Frutos con madurez media y completa concluyeron con valores de ángulo de matiz de 15.6 (rojo) y 8.6 (rojo morado), respectivamente, y los de madurez inicial con 31.7 (rojo-naranja). Firmeza, acidez titulable (AT), sólidos solubles totales (SST) y vitamina C, disminuyeron (P ≤ 0.05) durante el almacenamiento. La firmeza se mantuvo más alta en frutos de madurez inicial. La AT disminuyó alrededor de 80 % en los frutos de los tres estados de madurez, pero fue más alta en los cosechados con madurez inicial. Los SST tuvieron un descenso significativo (P ≤ 0.05) con valores °Brix más altos en frutos con madurez media y completa que en madurez inicial. La relación °Brix/acidez (RBA) fue similar en los primeros 4 d de almacenamiento, pero los frutos en madurez inicial mantuvieron por más tiempo (10 d) los valores óptimos de RBA (<40). La disminución de vitamina C fue mayor (P ≤ 0.05) en frutos con madurez inicial, mientras que la respiración fue mayor en frutos con madurez completa que con madurez inicial y media, y se observó un comportamiento no climatérico. La vida postcosecha para frutos con madurez media y completa fue entre 6 y 8 d, mientras que para madurez inicial fue 10 d, pero en estos últimos el color rojo menos intenso afectó la calidad.
Plantas de tomate (Solanum lycopersicum L. cv. IB-9) fueron cultivadas en un sistema hidropónico con el objetivo de evaluar el efecto de la relación nitrato, amonio, urea (100/0/0, 85/15/0, 85/0/15 y 85/7.5/7.5) y la concentración de potasio (7 y 9 mol m-3) en el rendimiento de fruto y composición mineral de las plantas. El rendimiento de fruto no fue afectado por los tratamientos, por lo que se puede sustituir 15% del total de nitrógeno nítrico de la solución nutritiva con un porcentaje igual de nitrógeno amoniacal o ureico, o una mezcla de amonio y urea, cada una a 7.5%. El contenido de fósforo en las hojas aumentó significativamente con la interacción de 85/15/0 y 9 mol m-3 de potasio, mientras que la concentración de calcio en las hojas disminuyó estadísticamente con 100/0/0 y 9 mol m-3 de potasio.
Se estimó la distribución jerárquica de la variación fenotípica entre poblaciones, entre y dentro de familias, y la proporción de esta variación que tiene una base genética en cuatro poblaciones de chile silvestre (Capsicum annuum var. glabriusculum) del noroeste de México. Los caracteres medidos fueron: altura de planta, diámetro de tallo, largo de hoja, ancho de hoja, número de frutos por planta, número de semillas por fruto, número de semillas por planta y peso de semilla. De la variación total, 61.8 % se distribuyó dentro de familias, 24.7 % entre familias y 13.5 % entre poblaciones. De la variación fenotípica, total 38.2 % tiene una base genética, de la cual 30.1 % se distribuyó entre y 69.9 % dentro (de familias) de poblaciones. La heredabilidad en sentido amplio varió entre características y entre poblaciones; en altura de planta, diámetro de tallo, largo de hoja, número de frutos por planta, número de semillas por planta y peso individual de semilla, la heredabilidad fue mínima. En ancho de hoja y número de semillas por fruto, los valores de heredabilidad variaron de 0.10 hasta 0.75. En tres poblaciones los valores de heredabilidad mínimos fueron cero o cercanos a cero en tres características diferentes en cada población, mientras que en la población restante variaron de 0.23 a 0.75. Las dos poblaciones adyacentes (Yecorato Mezquite y Yecorato Camino) separadas por sólo 500 m de distancia difirieron sustancialmente en la heredabilidad de cinco de las ocho características analizadas. Estos resultados sugieren que el potencial para el cambio evolutivo de una característica particular varía ampliamente entre las poblaciones estudiadas, aún en aquéllas separadas por pocos metros. La variación dentro de familias fue alta y se distribuyó uniformemente a través de las poblaciones en todas las características, excepto en diámetro de tallo. Esta alta variación puede ser causada por diferencias en la plasticidad de los individuos dentro de las familias.
Aunque se ha reportado el efecto principal de diferentes relaciones de nitrato/amonio y de concentraciones de bicarbonato en la solución nutritiva sobre el crecimiento de las plantas, se conoce poco de la influencia de la interacción de ambos factores sobre el tomate (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.). Por ello se hicieron dos estudios para determinar la influencia de tres relaciones porcentuales nitrato/amonio (100/0, 85/15 y 70/30) y tres concentraciones de HCO3- (0, 2.5 y 5 molc m-3) en la solución nutritiva, sobre el crecimiento, rendimiento y composición mineral de tomate cv. ‘Slolly F-1’ desarrollado en hidroponía. La relación 70/30 de nitrato/amonio redujo (P ≤ 0.05) el peso seco de raíz y el volumen radical, mientras que la concentración de 5 molc HCO3- m-3 disminuyó el diámetro de tallo, el peso seco de hojas, el volumen radical y la relación vástago/raíz de las plantas jóvenes. La concentración de calcio en hojas y tallos de plantas jóvenes y plantas adultas se redujo (P ≤ 0.05) con la relación 70/30; en contraste, la concentración de fósforo en dichos órganos se incrementó (P ≤ 0.05). La adición de 5 molc HCO3- m-3 a la solución nutritiva redujo (P ≤ 0.05) la concentración de fósforo en hojas y tallos de plantas jóvenes, y en tallos y frutos de plantas adultas. La interacción 70/30 y 0 molc de HCO3- m-3 incrementó (P ≤ 0.05) la altura de plantas jóvenes y redujo la concentración de magnesio en hojas y tallos. Sustituir 30 % del nitrógeno nítrico con nitrógeno amoniacal o añadir 5 mol HCO3- m-3 a la solución nutritiva en la etapa de planta joven, redujo algunos indicadores del crecimiento pero no afectó al rendimiento de tomate.
