A complete randomized block design was used in a factorial 2X3 treatments arrangement as result of two grafting techniques (central stake and jointed) and three protection systems of the grafting (polystyrene bag, paraffin film ribbon, and no protection). Three shading (60, 80 and 90%) level were the blocking factor. After 100 days, no significant differences (p<0.05) were found for the grafting techniques, both techniques showed similar results in combination with the protection systems with 80% shading, resulting in 78% of successful grafting. The combination of the same techniques without protection system resulted in 0% grafting. These results showed that it is possible to successfully graft bolaina blanca by any of the two grafting techniques using a protection system at 60% shading during 30 days. The presence of young vegetative parts in the grafting material and the stump positively influence the success of grafting.
This study evaluated the effects of different concentrations of Indol-3-butiryc acid (IBA), rooting media and vegetative characteristics on the rooting of juvenile stem cuttings of tornillo (Cedrelinga cateniformis Ducke) in two consecutive experiments using non-mist propagators. In the first experiment, five IBA concentrations (0, 1000, 2000, 4000 and 8000 ppm) and three rooting media (fine sand, coarse sand and fine gravel) were tested, using a randomized complete block-split plot design with five replications. In the second experiment, three types of 2 cutting (apical, middle and basal), two leaf areas (15 and 30 cm ) and two cutting lengths (4 and 8 cm) were evaluated, using a randomized complete block design with factorial arrangement (3 x 2 x 2) and three replications. In this case, cuttings were set to root in the best rooting medium (fine sand) and with the best IBA concentration (4000 ppm) as determined in the previous experiment. An acceptable rooting percentage of 70%, an average root length of 1.2 cm and a mean number of roots of 4,6 per cutting were obtained using middle cuttings with leaf areas 2 of 30 cm , 4000 ppm of IBA and fine sand as rooting medium in the non-mist propagator.
EFFECTS OF INDOLE 3 BUTYRIC ACID AND BURNT RICE HUSKS ON THE ROOTING OF YOUNG SPROUTS OF MAHOGANY (Swietenia macrophylla) IN SUB-IRRIGATED CHAMBER IN THE PERUVIAN AMAZON ABSTRACTThe aim of this study was to determine the effects of different concentrations of indole 3 butyric acid (AIB) and substrates (sand and burnt rice husks) on the rooting of young sprouts of mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla). The pegs were obtained from juvenile apical sprouts with 6 cm and 40 cm2 of length and leaf area, respectively. Two consecutive trials were carried out. In the first, different substrates and doses of indole 3 butyric acid (IBA) were tested, and in the second, the best substrate and dosage of the first trial were used to test two types of cuttings (apical and basal). Sub-irrigated chamber was used as propagation micro environment. The analysis of variance for rooting and survival showed no significant difference (p<0.05), between substrates or among dosage levels of IBA. For sand and burnt rice husks, rooting was 85% and 83% respectively. Dosages of 0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, and 0.7% IBA, yielded a rooting of 75%, 90%, 87%, 78% and 92% respectively. However, the most successful result was obtained with the interaction between burnt rice husks, 0.7 % IBA and apical sprouts. In the fourth week, rooting was 50% and by the eighth week, 93% of cuttings had rooted.
