Se ha realizado un gran número de estudios para identificar los efectos de los metales pesados en plantas cultivadas y en algunas especies consideradas como hiperacumuladoras. Sin embargo, po¬cos esfuerzos se han dedicado a la evaluación de especies vegetales nativas de zonas áridas para fitorremediación. Este estudio se llevó a cabo ex situ para evaluar la tasa de fitoextracción de plomo en Acacia farnesiana L. Will. Se utilizaron árboles jóvenes (n=48), colocados en macetas plásticas, en donde se agregó una combinación de tres concentraciones de plomo (0, 250 y 500 mg•kg-1) en forma de Pb(NO3)2 y cuatro dosis de nitrógeno (0, 100, 300 y 500 mg•kg-1) en forma de Fosfo-Nitrato (33-03-00). Se evaluó la tasa fotosintética y la concentración de plomo en raíz, tallo y hoja. Las dosis de nitrógeno y las concentraciones de plomo por separado no produjeron diferencias significativas en la tasa fotosintética de las plantas de huizache, pero la interacción entre esos dos factores fue es¬tadísticamente significativa (P=0.0074), encontrándose que la mayor acumulación de plomo ocurrió en la parte aérea de la planta con una media de 352.34 mg•kg-1.
Se estudió por medio de DAS- ELISA la distribución del Onion yellow dwarf virus (OYDV, virus del enanismo amarillo de la cebolla), Garlic common latent virus (GarCLV, virus latente común del ajo), Shallot latent v irus (SLV, virus latente del chalote), Leek yellow stripe virus (LYSV: virus de la franja amarilla del puerro), Tobacco etch virus (TEV, virus del jaspeado del tabaco) y Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV, virus de la marchitez manchada del jitomate) en hojas, psdeudotallo e inflorescencia de plantas de cebolla asintomáticas colectadas en diferentes épocas de 2010 en tres localidades del estado de Zacatecas, México. Se registró la presencia de esos virus en los órganos mencionados aunque resultó frecuente detectar infecciones mezcladas en hojas individuales donde las interacciones más comunes involucraban dos, tres y cuatro virus. No se encontró una tendencia que relacione la presencia viral con los órganos vegetales analizados o con la edad de las hojas; sin embargo, las infecciones con un solo virus parecen ser menos frecuentes en las hojas de edad intermedia.
El virus de la mancha amarilla del iris (IYSV) es la enfermedad viral de mayor importancia para los cultivos de ajo y cebolla en Zacatecas, México. A finales de mayo de 2010 se encontraron lesiones amarillentas en forma de diamante en hojas y tallo floral de plantas de cebolla en parcelas comerciales, localizados en los municipios de Loreto, Villa de Cos, Sain Alto, Villanueva, Calera de V. R. y Enrique Estrada pertenecientes al estado de Zacatecas. La prueba DAS-ELISA mostró resultados positivos para este virus en las muestras procedentes de diferentes municipios. Thrips tabaci el único vector conocido del IYSV se encontró en las parcelas comerciales muestreadas, aunque la presencia de Frankliniella occidentalis también fue reconocida en una parcela comercial de cebolla, cuyas muestras resultaron positivas a IYSV. No se encontró diferencia entre la altura, número de hojas, peso y diámetro de bulbo de plantas sin lesiones y aquellas con diferente número de lesiones de IYSV.
Alrededor de 5 200 hectáreas de ajo son cultivadas en México donde la región norte centro, es una de las principales áreas productoras de esta hortaliza. La falta de variedades de ajo localmente adaptadas es una seria desventaja para los productores de ajo. En este reporte se mencionan las principales características agronómicas de “CEZAC 06ˮ, una nueva variedad de ajo disponible para los productores de los estados de Zacatecas, Aguascalientes, Durango, Chihuahua y Coahuila. Las principales ventajas de esta variedad son rendimientos más altos, bulbos consistentemente redondos, menor número de dientes por bulbo y maduración homogénea. En parcelas comerciales el rendimiento se ha mejorado en 9-17% y se han alcanzado rendimientos de hasta 30 t ha-1 con el uso de “CEZAC 06ˮ.
