Resumen: Mediante una foto-etnografía del Machaq Mara (Año Nuevo aymara) en la fronteriza comunidad de Cancosa, en el Norte Grande de Chile, exponemos cómo opera un proceso de etnogénesis. Sugerimos que el principio fundacional centro-andino de la reciprocidad complementaria juega un rol fundamental en este proceso. A través de un abordaje reflexivo visual mediante exposición fotográfica, viabilizada a través de nuestra participación observante, revisamos archivos y entrevistas sobre la génesis contemporánea de esta festividad en Chile. Proponemos que el Machaq Mara representa un espacio de análisis preferencial para identificar dinámicas de etnogénesis local, a través de las cuales es cardinal la complementariedad ritual, así como el rol del Estado y de funcionarios indígenas.
