The knowledge of insect biodiversity in natural areas of Argentina is limited, and termites are among the understudied taxa. In order to assess the diversity of Isoptera in some protected areas of the country, termite sampling within three National Parks of the Northeast region of Argentina was developed during 1995-1999. The results presented in this paper correspond to the Chaco National Park (Province of Chaco), Iguassu National Park (Province of Misiones) and Mburucuya National Park (Province of Corrientes). Among the four termite families recorded from Argentina, the family Termitidae was the best represented at the three sampled areas. The recorded genera (15) were: Rugitermes Holmgren and Tauritermes Krishna (Kalotermitidae), Heterotermes Frogatt (Rhinotermitidae), Cornitermes Wasmann, Cortaritermes Mathews, Diversitermes Holmgren, Nasutitermes Dudley, Velocitermes Holmgren (Nasutitermitinae), Amitermes Silvestri, Microcerotermes Silvestri, Neocapritermes Holmgren, Termes Linné (Termitinae), Anoplotermes Müller, Aparatermes Fontes and Ruptitermes Mathews (Apicotermitinae) (Termitidae). None of the collected termite species was common to the three National Parks, and only four of them were detected at two of the reserves. Due to the particular assemblage of termites found at each park, these three natural protected areas could be considered important reserves for the conservation of the termite fauna from the Northeast region of Argentina. Entre as quatro famílias de cupins registrados na Argentina, a família dos Termitidae foi a mais bem representada nas três áreas.
The Castianeirinae genus Myrmecotypus was described by O. Pickard-Cambridge (1894) and currently includes eight species. All of them, except the atypical M. lineatus (Emerton 1909) (only record from USA), occur in the Neotropical region (known from Mexico to Panamá), Panamá being the southern most representative distribution of genus. Reiskind (1969) carried out the revision of the subfamily Castianeirinae Reiskind 1969 from North and Central America, concluding that much more study of more extensive collections will be needed to clarify the origin and distribution of South American species of this subfamily.
Abstract. We describe the mimetic relationship between the ant-like spider Myrmecotypus iguazu Rubio & Arbino 2009 (Araneae: Corinnidae) and the carpenter ant Camponotus sericeiventris Guérin (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), studied in a subtropical rainforest in Iguazú National Park, Argentina. The morphological adaptations, aspects of coloration, and behavior responsible for the ant-like appearance in M. iguazu (the mimic) provide strong evidence that its model is C. sericeiventris. Both field observations and field and laboratory experiments suggest that this spider is a Batesian mimic.
<p>El objetivo de las tareas desarrolladas en el marco de “la universidaD en el medio”, “ UNNE Salud” y el “Voluntariado universitario” fue inducir a la población a reconocer la responsabilidad que le cabe como gestora de un ambiente saludable y adoptar las medidas preventivas como la mejor forma de control de los vectores y patógenos. Se trabajó en instituciones educativas de Santa Ana de los guácaras, riachuelo, San Cayetano y Corrientes capital (Corrientes) y Antequera y San Juan Pescador (Chaco). Participaron docentes de las asignaturas biología de los parásitos, entomología y biología de los invertebrados, alumnos de las carreras de la Licenciatura en ciencias biológicas y profesorado en biología; niños en edad escolar desde 9 años a 15 años, docentes y directivos de escuelas primarias y de nivel medio, agentes municipales y de salud. Se elaboraron materiales didácticos y tres publicaciones. Los alcances de los proyectos desarrolladostrascendieron la formación sobre los parásitos, contribuyendo a reforzar la formación de toda la comunidad educativa como personas comprometidas con la sociedad y una toma de conciencia de que la actividad universitaria no tiene que ser algo abstracto, sino inmersa en la realidad de la región.</p>
