SUMMARYWe present a new first-principle framework for the prediction of effective properties and statistical correlation lengths for multicomponent random media. The methodology is based upon a variational hierarchical decomposition procedure which recasts the original multiscale problem as a sequence of three scale-decoupled subproblems. The focus of the current paper is the computationally intensive mesoscale subproblem, which comprises: Monte-Carlo acceptance-rejection sampling; domain generation and parallel partition based on Voronoi tesselation; parallel Delaunay mesh generation; homogenization-theory formulation of the governing equations; finite-element discretization; parallel iterative solution procedures; and implementation on message-passing multicomputers, here the Intel iPSC/860 hypercube. Two (two-dimensional) problems of practical importance are addressed heat conduction in random fibrous composites, and creeping flow through random fibrous porous media.

A chemical, structural and biological study on the beta-amyloid peptide beta12-28 is reported which was carried out in order to assess the feasibility using this peptide fragment as a model of the natural beta-amyloid protein. The aggregation properties of beta12-28 have been investigated by pulse field-gradient NMR spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The results obtained suggest that beta12-28 behaviour is comparable to that of the natural beta-amyloid protein although kinetically slower. Translational diffusion coefficients obtained by NMR on an aged beta12-28 solution suggest that the soluble peptide fraction is composed of oligomeric intermediates adopting an extended ellipsoidal assembly rather than a spherical one. The beta12-28 peptide proved to be cytotoxic in PC12 cell cultures as monitored by the MTT assay, although a lack of reproducibility was observed in the dose-response experiments.

The interaction of cyclic enol esters with diversely substituted anilines and ethyl glyoxalate yields, under Sc(OTf)3 catalysis, disubstituted N-aryl lactams in a multicomponent reaction. The protocol allows access to the trans stereoisomers after an epimerization of the initial mixture in which the cis isomers predominate. Vinyl acetate yields quinoline derivatives, whereas isopropenyl acetate leads to the corresponding Mannich adducts.

An emerging and attractive target for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease is to inhibit the aggregation of beta-amyloid protein (Abeta). We applied the retro-enantio concept to design an N-methylated peptidic inhibitor of the Abeta42 aggregation process. This inhibitor, inrD, as well as the corresponding all-L (inL) and all-D (inD) analogues were assayed for inhibition of Abeta42 aggregation. They were also screened in neuroblastoma cell cultures to assess their capacity to inhibit Abeta42 cytotoxicity and evaluated for proteolytic stability. The results reveal that inrD and inD inhibit Abeta42 aggregation more effectively than inL, that inrD decreases Abeta42 cytotoxicity to a greater extent than inL and inD, and that as expected, both inD and inrD are stable to proteases. Based on these results, we propose that the retro-enantio approach should be considered in future designs of peptide inhibitors of protein aggregation.

Ecuador has a high diversity of ecosystems in its coastal and marine territory with beaches, bays, estuaries, cliffs, coastal lagoons and rocky coasts being the most representative. So far, 1,859 marine species have been identified in Ecuador. Of these, 1380 species of non-commercial marine invertebrates and vertebrates, belonging to 8 Phyla and distributed in 25 groups or classes, occur along the coast of Ecuador. These are: Protozoans, 9 groups: Oceanic and estuarine Diatoms, Cyanophyta, Chlorophyta, Dinoflagellates, Coccolithophorida, Silicoflagellates, Euglenophyta, Tintinnids and planktonic and benthic Foraminifera; Cnidaria, 2 classes: Hydromedusae and Scyphomedusae; Mollusca, 5 classes: Wood-boring molluscs and rock-boring and benthic bivalves; Gasteropoda: (Thecosomatans, Pteropods, Heteropods and benthic species, Polyplacophora, Scaphopoda and Cephalopoda); Annelida, 1 group: benthic Polychaeta; Arthropoda, 1 class: Crustacea (Cirripedia, Anomura, Brachyuran, Euphausiids); Chaetognatha, 1 group; Echinodermata, 4 classes: Asteroidea, Ophiuroidea, Echinoidea and Holothuroidea; Chordata, 2 classes: Marine mammals and birds. Both the biodiversity of the meiobenthos of the Gulf of Guayaquil and that of the inter-tidal zone are presented. The 479 demersal species of commercial importance are grouped in 4 Phyla (Chordata, Arthropoda, Mollusca, and Echinodermata), 41 orders, 143 families and 258 genera. The phylum Chordata represented by fish is the most diverse group on the coast with 270 species from 142 genera, 63 families, and 22 orders, the order Perciformes being the best represented with 143 species. Molluscs form the next biggest group with 110 species. In general, the biggest biodiversity of species seems to be in the Gulf of Guayaquil, the main estuary of Ecuador. However, this may be because that area has been better studied than the others. The work presented is mainly the result of research carried out by Equatorians and thus cannot be claimed to include the whole of the current information about marine biodiversity in Ecuador.KEYWORDS: Biodiversity, pelagic, demersal, benthic, Gulf of Guayaquil. a b s t r a c tThe problem of the effective thermal conductivity for a matrix-fiber composite exhibiting a periodic microstructure is studied. The composite is macroscopically anisotropic with nonuniform interfacial thermal resistance between the phases. First, the asymptotic homogenization method, which was employed recently to address related problems, is applied to recover the expression for the effective thermal conductivity obtained from classical micromechanical approaches. Then, improved bounds for the effective conductivity are obtained from a generalization of the two-dimensional realization of results by Lipton and Vernescu (1996). The bounds depend on the concentration and the conductivity of each phase, as well as on the fibers cross-section geometry and type of periodic distribution, and on the nonuniform interfacial resistance. Results are compared numerically with those obtained via asymptotic homogenization and finite element approaches, showing good agreement in a variety of situations.
