Las consecuencias de la guerra naval de 1865-1866 entre la flota española y la flota aliada sudamericana han sido olvidadas y subestimadas, probablemente porque ha primado una perspectiva descriptiva y política de este acontecimiento. Por ello, el objetivo de este artículo es ofrecer una nueva visión que pondere el conflicto desde lo técnico y lo estratégico. Para ello se analizó y contrastó cualitativamente la bibliografía específica de la historia naval junto con documentos contemporáneos al conflicto. Como resultado, aunque se constató la escasa importancia de este conflicto en la historiografía especializada, se exponen las razones que hacen de esta guerra un hito, especialmente por las experiencias tecnológicas y estratégicas que impulsaron el desarrollo posterior de las marinas de los grandes imperios y la estrategia naval en el Océano Pacífico.
