valence varies from one geographic location to another.AIM: To assess the prevalence of third molar Impaction among residents of District Panchkula, IndiaMATERIALS AND METHODS: The study adopted a cross-sectional study design and impacted molars that were observed during routine diagnostic procures that required the taking of an IOPAR were selected, after which, the patients were advised to go for an OPG to determine the number of impacted teeth as well as the angulation of those teeth.RESULTS: The study comprised of 306 study subjects, with a majority of them being males (194, 63.4%); The most frequent number of third molar impactions were of one teeth (163, 53.3%), followed by two teeth (96, 31.4%). Mesioangular impaction (170, 55.5%) was the most common type, followed by vertical impactions (82, 29.8%). A significant difference was observed upon comparison of location and gender (p=0.04%). Odds’ Ratio (OR) analysis also found that males were 1.6 times more prone of having impactions as compared to females.CONCLUSION: Upon suspicion of having the presence of impacted molars, dentists of Panchkula region are advised to take an OPG and manage the same accordingly so that complications arising from an impacted tooth can be avoided.
AIM: The present study aimed at evaluating the role of mental foramen and mandibular canal in gender determination using CBCT.METHODOLOGY: A total number of 73 volumes of CBCT of the mandible was evaluated. Four measurements were used to assess the bucco-lingual and supero-inferior location of mandibular canal and the supero-inferior location of mental foramen was determined using two measurements on both right and left sides of the mandible. Inter and intra-observer variability was analyzed with help of t-test.RESULTS: Good intra-observer and inter-observer agreement was noted with regard to all the six measurements. The mean of all the measurements of mental nerve foramen and mandibular canal was found to be higher in males than females, however, significant difference was noted with regard to Superior Mental foramen (SMeF) and Superior Inferior Alveolar Canal (SMC) (p=0.037, p<0.001 respectively) on the right side and SIAC and Inferior Inferior Alveolar Canal (IIAC), (p=0.015, p=0.046 respectively) on the left side.CONCLUSION: The results of the present study suggest that SMeF, SIAC and IIAC may be used for gender determination. Further, either side of mandible can be used for this purpose. CBCT was found to be a useful modality in this study for sexual dimorphism.
INTRODUCTION: Orthodontic treatment is widely acknowledged and accepted in everyday dental practice due to the positive effects it has on the dentofacial complex. Importance of oral hygiene in orthodontic patients is also important to prevent any further oral diseases.AIM: The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice of oral hygiene protocols among patients having orthodontic treatment.MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sample consisted of 90 patients who had permanent dentition from the Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics and various questions were asked regarding the knowledge, attitude and practice on oral hygiene during the time of orthodontic treatment. All the responses were analysed statistically.RESULTS: The results of the study showed that nearly 40% of the patients were unaware about gingival health, 65% did not follow the oral hygiene instruction. Despite being given instructions, most of them were reluctant in practicing them strictly.CONCLUSION: The knowledge, attitude, practice of oral hygiene among orthodontic patients were poor and showed the need of better education and motivation. Many factors may be responsible for the non-maintenance of gingival health practices. There is a need to incorporate and evaluate more intense oral hygiene programs in the future.
