Foi estudada a epidemiologia das helmintoses pulmonares e gastrintestinais em bezerros mestiços (Zebu x Holandês) mantidos em regime de pastoreio permanente em região de baixada, correspondente ao clima Aw, no Estado do Rio de Janeiro. Os animais tinham entre 6 e 9 meses de idade, e o experimento teve duração de 24 meses. Os animais eram portadores de infecção natural por diversas espécies de helmintos e o trabalho baseou-se na contagem de ovos por grama de fezes e necropsias de pelo menos quatro animais a cada 28 dias. Observou-se a tendência dos animais abrigarem maiores populações de helmintos nas estações de outono e primavera. Os parâmetros bioclimatográficos representados por elipse, obtida por meio da relação precipitação pluviométrica e temperatura média das mínimas, foram eficientes para demonstrar o potencial de parasitose clínica, a qual correspondeu às estações de outono e primavera.
Estudou-se a distribuição estacionai da eliminação de ovos por grama de fezes e sobrevivência das larvas infestantes no bolo fecal e pastagens de Haemonchus placei, Trichostrongylus axei, Cooperia punctata e Oesophagostomum radiatum. O experimento foi conduzido em piquetes na Baixada Fluminense, estado do Rio de Janeiro, e as amostras dos bolos fecais de bezerros mestiços zebu x holandês e da pastagem foram examinados a cada 14 dias para contagem das larvas infestantes. As maiores contagens de ovos por grama de fezes ocorreu no final do inverno e primavera, coincidindo com a temperatura amena e elevada umidade relativa. A sobrevivência de larvas no bolo fecal e na pastagem foi alta na primavera, esporádica ou baixa nas estações de verão e out()no, exceto para larvas do gênero Cooperia, que demostraram capacidade de sobrevivência nas elevadas temperaturas e condições ecológicas desfavoráveis. Os resultados indicam que as larvas dos helmintos são susceptíveis à temperatura elevada observada no verão e início da estação de outono, sugerindo ser esta a melhor época para estabelecimento de manejo estratégico para controle das helmintoses na região estudada.
Foi promovida a infestação experimental de dois grupos em seis bezerros mestiços zebu x holandês com 12 a 15 semanas de idade, com larvas infestantes de Oesophagostomum radiatum (Rudolphi, 1803). O grupo teste recebeu o total de 8 mil a 10 mil larvas infestantes por via oral. O período pré-patente variou entre 35 e 39 dias pós-infestação, com o máximo de ovopostura ocorrendo entre a 6ª e a 8ª semana pós-infestação. A anorexia foi responsável pela redução no consumo de alimentos, tendo contribuído para a patogenia. Clinicamente os animais apresentaram anorexia, diarréia, hipertermia moderada, baixa conversão alimentar e baixo ganho de peso, em comparação com o grupo testemunha.
