De rol van De Nederlandsche Bank (dnb) bij slavernij is tot dusver niet of nauwelijks onderzocht. De auteurs van Dienstbaar aan de keten? onderzoeken deze rol in de periode vanaf de oprichting van dnb in 1814 tot de formele afschaffing van de trans-Atlantische slavernij in Nederland op 1 juli 1863. Na de afschaffing volgde een periode van Staatstoezicht die in totaal tien jaar duurde. Hoewel de rol van dnb nauwelijks is onderzocht, is er eerder onderzoek gedaan naar de betrokkenheid van Nederlandse banken bij slavernij, zoals in het proefschrift De Westindische plantages van 1720 tot 1795: Financiën en Handel van J. P. van der Voort (1973). De aandacht voor banken en het slavernijverleden is de laatste twee decennia gegroeid. In 2006 verscheen een rapport over abn amro, getiteld Predecessors of abn amro Bank N.V. and Connections to African Slavery in the United States and the Americas. Daaruit bleek dat de Nederlandse voorgangers van de bank betrokken waren bij slavernij.
