Structures made of structural concrete are designed to withstand different time‐dependent or time‐independent influences during their expected service lifetime. Most of these influences can be considered in a sufficient manner by mathematical and statistical approaches, while some do appear combined with certain structural, environmental, and material boundary conditions. These can, in most cases, not be foreseen, verified or they change during the lifecycle of a concrete structure. It is therefore obligatory to rely on an efficient conservation strategy for each structure to ensure its safety and overall economic efficiency. For this purpose, the fib Model Code for Concrete Structures 2010 already suggests a general workflow to follow a predefined or provisional conservation strategy and condition control procedure. These existing proposals are yet of very general nature and disclaim practical decision‐making rules to survey and assess existing structures as part of a condition‐based conservation strategy. In this contribution, the main decision‐making options at an early stage of a construction's life cycle management are pointed out, considering their importance for a structure's time‐dependent performance and their relation to continuative decisions for conservation management. Proposals for the implementation of practical advice for condition‐based conservation strategies in international guidelines are made.
Development of an Approximation Procedure for a Structural Reliability Assessment of Reinforced Concrete Bridges on the Basis of the Results from Bridge InspectionPart 2 of the paper shows the development of the approximation procedure for the reliability assessment of reinforced concrete bridges according to RI-EBW-PRÜF [1]. An essential part of this is the development carried out by the model uncertainty bridge inspector, as the respective bridge inspector's individual assessment of the damage of a bridge has a decisive influence on the condition evaluation. Furthermore, the dimensional analyses of ultimate limit states are shown, as the general use of the developed methodology can be achieved with an ingenious standardization. The application of the procedure with the developed software tool is presented in conclusion. Part 1 of the two papers describes the basics of the methodology and shows the development of the stochastic models for the material and geometry parameters which have changed as a result of damage.
Basics and Development of Stochastic Models for a Structural Reliability Assessment of Reinforced Concrete Bridges on the Basis of the Results from Bridge InspectionA probabilistic method based on the reliability theory allows a quick assessment of the load bearing capacity of damaged reinforced concrete bridges. The aim is to support the bridge inspection engineer during the bridge inspection according to DIN 1076 and not to replace a static recalculation. It should allow a quick decision as to whether or not a restriction of the crossing traffic is necessary. With this method it is possible to achieve a better assessment of the influence of damages on reinforced concrete bridges which are seen in a visual bridge inspection. Part 1 of the two papers describes the basics of the methodology and shows the development of the stochastic models for the material and geometry parameters which have changed as a result of damage. In Part 2 the model uncertainty for the bridge inspector and the practical use in accordance with the RI‐EBW‐PRÜF are shown.
Bridge across the Barkauer Crossing in Kiel -Recalculation and rehabilitation of a demanding prestressed concrete bridgeThe bridge across the Barkauer crossing was built in 19970/71 as a prestressed concrete bridge with a wide T-beam cross section. The bridge has seven spans with span widths up to 33.15 m and it is extremely curved in the ground section. The recalculation of the bridge on the levels 1 and 2 according to the German recalculation regulations [1] showed good results for most of the parts of the bridge. Deficits were found only in the axes B,C and D. Therefore a recalculation on level 4 was done, based on a FE-calculation and the proof for bridge class 60 was obtained. For a safe long time use a rehabilitation was necessary.
