The natural abundance 13C resonance spectra of a variety of sterols and steroidal hormones have been determined at 15.1 MHz. The chemical shifts of the carbons in these substances were found to span on the order of 200 ppm and for most steroids with the aid of complete proton decoupling it was possible to resolve all of the carbon resonances one from the other. It has also been possible by using specific single-frequency and off-resonance proton decoupling, hydroxyl acetylation effects on chemical shifts, deuteration, and substituent influences in analogous compounds to make self-consistent and unambiguous assignments of nearly all of the resonances encountered. The carbon resonances are in general far more informative than proton resonances for structural analysis of steroids.nstrumentation is now available for relatively routine SOC., 88, 4301 (1966).

In the course of the last decade the chemistry of insecticides was expanded with the discovery of new cyclopropanecarboxylic acid esters of specific structure, far superior in action to the hitherto known insecticides of other substance classes or the natural prototypes from the group of pyrethrum constituents. The discovery quickly precipitated a host of wideranging studies on the synthesis of these compounds. The development of selective methods of synthesizing complicated small rings called for a comprehensive repertoire: thus, synthesis of the compounds on an industrial scale makes use of sigmatropic rearrangement, radical addition, and nucleophilic ring closure with carbanions. These new industrial syntheses have acquired particular topicality because of their use of stereospecific and enantioselective methods.

Diese Entdeckung hat eine Fiille vielfaltiger synthetischelc Arbeiten ausgelost. Um selektive Synthesemethoden fur komplizierte Kleinringe zu entwickeln, wurde ein umfangreiches Repertoire des synthetisch arbeitenden Chemikers aktiviert: So nutzt eine groljtechnisch ausgeiibte Synthese dieser Verbindungen sigmatrope Umlagerung, radikalische Addition und nucleophilen Ringschlulj mit Carbanionen. (4911 und der 3-(2-Methoxycarbonyl-l-propenyl)-2,2-dimethyl-l-cyclopropancarbonsaure [Pyrethrinsaure] sind.[ Es ist klar, da13 die hervorragenden Eigenschaften der neuen Pyrethroide eine weltweite Forschungsaktivitat auf diesem Gebiet induzierten. Insbesondere wurden Aktivitat und Phantasie industrieller Forscher angeregt ; dies fuhrte zu einer Fulle neuer synthetischer Ergebnisse auf dem Gebiet der Pyrethroide. The techniques involved in the assignment of the resonances to specific carbons are outlined. The potential of this nondegradative procedure for structural analysis is demonstrated for the investigation of carbon atoms in chemical and biochemical systems.
