Undoubtedly, such factors as different cultural background affects 'the shape' of economy. The impact of cultural factors on the economy, as well as its specific fields (particularly accounting), has been studied by, among others, Mueller, Hofstede and Gray. Reflections on the topic were also conducted in Polish literature, although relatively late. One of the cultural factors is, beyond doubt, religion, forming some ethical attitudes through the transfer of certain values, which become a guide to individual actions, and exerting an obvious influence on the applicable standards in a society. The author does not pretend to consider the relations between religion and ethics, in the article only issues concerning possible to demonstrate influence of religious norms on accounting are raised. The aim is briefly to discuss the impact of Christianity, Islam and Confucianism on accounting systems and practices, based on literature studies. In conclusion, the question arises about the sense of the convergence of accounting standards, at least in the context of the current efforts undertaken in this field.
The article discusses Islamic ethics and the impact it has on the professional ethics of Muslim auditors. Based on studies of the available literature on the subject and the Qur’an, the paper identifies the source of Muslim ethics and indicates that its perspective is slightly different from the perspectives known in the West. It also identifies the ethical principles which should be followed by a Muslim auditor. The analysis of the sources indicates that Islamic ethics and the understanding of certain principles and rules in Mus-lim countries differ (for cultural and religious reasons) from the perspective commonly adopted in other countries, hence the belief that it is necessary to create their own code of ethics for professionals, such as auditors. Attempting to assess how cultural norms affect professional ethics, based on a selected example of professional audit practitioners in Muslim countries, the article may be a prelude to further research in this direction, not necessarily in relation to the Islamic cultural circle.
The article introduces religion as a source of Muslim ethics and shows how it is shaping the system of Islamic accounting and the ethical behaviour of Muslim accountants. Cultural differences are an increasingly important factor to be taken into account in running a business. They are also the subject of scientific research, for example, in the context of their impact on the development of accounting systems in various cultural circles. The relevant reference literature and the Qur’an were used for qualitative analysis carried out by means of induction and deduction methods. The analysis conducted indicates that although the scope of ethical codes in Muslim and non‑Muslim countries is very similar, in the case of Islam, its message is strengthened by religion seen as a source of law as well as professional ethics. This means that the legal sanctions envisaged for breaking the rules are accompanied by the fear of being excluded from the community and losing an opportunity for salvation. This article can fulfill an informative role, allowing the reader to understand the reasons for some differences in perceiving ethical issues and the way of doing business in different cultural circles.
The purpose of this article is to assess a comparability in the financial statements of entities from the Polish gaming industry. The article uses an unconventional approach to the analysis of comparability of financial statements, with particular emphasis on the business model of the entity. The overall conclusion is that Polish companies used similar accounting policies during the period under review regarding the methods of valuation of assets and liabilities. The scope of disclosures regarding impairment of assets does not allow for a full assessment of the premises underlying them. It is difficult to find out the criteria for qualifying costs for research and development, which are an important asset item. Deficiencies in disclosures are a common feature of the analyzed reports, which can be interpreted as a symptom of their comparability. The analyzed reports, despite the differences diagnosed, make possible to compare the financial situation and achievements of gaming companies.
