Living polymerizations involve the creation of polymer chains without significant irreversible chain transfer or chain termination. Such processes are widely used to access well-defined macromolecular materials with controlled architectures, such as block and star polymers. Although this concept was first realized for anionic polymerizations in the 1950s, many key recent advances have been made, most notably in the area of radical polymerization. Here, we report a living photopolymerization that involves photoexcited monomers. Exposure of metal-containing ferrocenophane monomers to Pyrex-filtered light from a mercury lamp (lambda>310 nm) or to bright sunlight in the presence of an anionic initiator leads to living polymerizations, in which the conversion and molecular weight of the resulting polymer can be controlled by the irradiation time. Photoirradiation selectively weakens the iron-cyclopentadienyl bond in the monomer, allowing the use of moderately basic and highly functional-group-tolerant initiators. The polymerization proceeds through attack of the initiator and propagating anion on the iron atom of the photoexcited monomer and, remarkably, the polymerization rate decreases with increasing temperature. Block copolymer formation is possible when the light source is alternately switched on and off in between sequential addition of different monomers, providing unprecedented, photocontrolled access to new types of functional polymers.

Among various approaches synthesizing metal nanoparticles and tiny clusters, a template method using dendrimers has significant advantages over other chemical approaches with respect to their synthetic precision and the scalability. A dendrimer of polydentate ligands assembles metal ions or salts into the interior allowing production of metal nanoparticles in the dendrimer. The dendrimer-encapsulated nanoparticles (DENs) exhibit unique and remarkable catalytic properties depending on the size and elemental formula. Recent advances in dendrimer chemistry even enabled the atom precise synthesis of subnanometer metal clusters that have been impossible to prepare by wet chemical methods. In addition, not only for the synthesis of metal nanoparticles and clusters, the dendrimer itself can also provide the modulation of activity and selectivity in the catalysis. In this review, we summarized the most relevant research in which the dendrimer was employed as the template, modulator, or stabilizer for nanoparticle synthesis for catalytic applications.

A new living anionic ring-opening polymerization (ROP) method for sila[1]ferrocenophane 1 was developed using UV irradiation in the presence of Na[C5H5] as a promoter to afford controlled molecular weight polymers (Mn = 9.3 x 103 to 7.0 x 104, PDI = 1.04-1.21). A ring-opened ferrocenylsilane with a dangling silyl-substituted cyclopentadienyl anion, which was obtained from a near-stoichiometric photoreaction of 1 with Li[C5H4Me], indicates an Fe-Cp bond cleavage mechanism for the photolytic ROP.
