Abstract Purpose -This paper aims to study different possibilities for implementing easy-to-use and cost-effective micro-systems to detect and trace expelled gases from rotten food. The paper covers various radio-frequency identification (RFID) technologies and gas sensors as the two promoting feasibilities for the tracing of packaged food. Monitoring and maintaining quality and safety of food in transport and storage from producer to consumer are the most important concerns in food industry. Many toxin gases, even in parts per billion ranges, are produced from corrupted and rotten food and can endanger the consumers' health. To overcome the issues, intelligent traceability of food products, specifically the packaged ones, in terms of temperature, humidity, atmospheric conditions, etc., has been paid attention to by many researchers. Design/methodology/approach -Food poisoning is a serious problem that affects thousands of people every year. Poisoning food must be recognized early to prevent a serious health problem. Contaminated food is usually detectable by odor. A small gas sensors and low-cost tailored to the type of food packaging and a communication device for transmitting alarm output to the consumer are key factors in achieving intelligent packaging. Findings -Conducting polymer composite, intrinsically conducting polymer and metal oxide conductivity gas sensors, metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET) gas sensors offer excellent discrimination and lead the way for a new generation of "smart sensors" which will mould the future commercial markets for gas sensors. Originality/value -Small size, low power consumption, short response time, wide operating temperature, high efficiency and small area are most important features of introduced system for using in package food.

A remote-powered UWB RFID tag in 0.18μm CMOS is presented. The innovation is to employ asymmetric communication links, i.e. UWB uplink and UHF downlink in order to achieve extremely low power, high data rate and accurate positioning. Measurement shows the tag can operate up to 10Mb/s with minimum input power of 14.1μW, corresponding to 13.9 meters of operation range.

-The next generation RFID system for ubiquitous identification and sensing requires both energy and system efficiency. This paper describes an efficient passive RFID system using impulse ultra-wideband radio (IR-UWB), at a 10m operation range. Unlike conventional passive RFID systems which rely on backscatter and narrowband radio, IR-UWB is introduced as the uplink (communication from a tag to a reader). By utilizing a specialized communication protocol and a novel ALOHA-based anti-collision algorithm, such Semi-UWB architecture enables a high network throughput (2000 tag/sec) under the low power and low cost constraint. A tag design for proof of concept is finally presented.

A fully integrated far-field powering system for RFID and implantable devices with monolithically fully integrated on-chip antenna in 0.18µm CMOS is presented. The chip receives power, clock and data wirelessly through RF signal at all the three ISM bands of 915 MHz, 2.45 GHz and 5.8 GHz. Measurements show a minimum input power of-19.41 dBm at 900MHz for chip operation, corresponding to 15.7 meter of operation range with an off-chip 0dB gain antenna. On the other hand, with its on-chip antenna at 5.8 GHz, the chip can be powered-up up to 7.5 cm distance. This is a huge improvement in terms of operation distance compared with other reported similar works with on-chip antenna as well as the off-chip antennas.
