A patient with congestive cardiomyopathy, induced by ventricular tachycardia, is presented. The patient had chronic ventricular tachycardia, which persisted 4 months and was eventually successfully treated by an antitachycardia pacemaker. A severe left ventricular dysfunction persisted after treatment for some days and then gradually resolved. After 3 months the indices of left ventricular function returned to normal values. The tachycardia-induced ventricular dysfunction seems to be a reversible disorder.
The pharyngocutaneous fistula (PCF) is the most common complication following a total laryngectomy (TL) with a wide range of incidence and various potential risk factors. The aim was to analyse the incidence and potential risk factors for PCF formation in a large study set collected over a longer period of time. In the retrospective study at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology and Cervicofacial Surgery of Ljubljana, 422 patients who were treated for head and neck cancer by TL between 2007 and 2020 were included. The comprehensive clinicopathologic data were collected including potential risk factors related to the patient, disease, surgical treatment and post-operative period for the development of fistulae. The patients were categorized into a group with the fistula (a study group) and one without it (a control group). The PCF then developed in 23.9% of patients. The incidence following a primary TL was 20.8% and 32.7% following salvage TL (p = 0.012). The results demonstrated that surgical wound infection, piriform sinus invasion, salvage TL, and total radiation dose were determined as independent risk factors for PCF formation. A diminishing surgical wound infection rate would contribute to a further reduction of the PCF rate.
A sports result takes on its meaning only when the public reacts to it after attending a sporting event. In order to determine and compare attitudes toward attending such events, students from two different cultural backgrounds were invited to participate in the study: 156 students from the Faculty of Sport in Ljubljana and 82 students from the Pedagogical faculty, Department of Physical Education and Sports in Bihać. They were asked to complete a questionnaire containing 25 variables on the motives for attending sporting events. The respondents rated the importance of the motives with scores from 1 to 5 (1—not the reason at all; 2—not the reason; 3—occasionally true for me; 4—true for me; 5—absolutely true). The obtained results were ranked and compared between the students of different faculties and between genders. The results showed that Bosnian and Slovenian students differed in 11 out of 25 motives. Statistically significant gender differences were found for only two out of 25 motives. Differences between Bosnian and Slovenian students were also found in the ranking of the importance of the motives as well as in their evaluation. The results show that cultural, national, and mentality differences between the two groups are reflected in the motives for following sporting events.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
