Introdução: Alguns sintomas relacionados à menopausa podem ser atenuados pela terapia de reposição hormonal, mas devido os efeitos colaterais e riscos que essa terapia oferece às pacientes, a medicina complementar e alternativa, especialmente a aromaterapia, se mostrou uma opção para o tratamento dos sintomas indesejados da menopausa. A aromaterapia é uma técnica que utiliza óleos essenciais aromáticos extraídos naturalmente de plantas que penetram no corpo de forma tópica ou pela inalação. Objetivo: Revisar a literatura sobre o efeito da aromaterapia nos sintomas indesejados da menopausa. Metodologia: Trata-se de uma revisão integrativa da literatura realizada através da busca por estudos científicos relacionados ao tema, nas seguintes bases de dados: PubMed, MEDLINE, Cochrane e LILACS, com os seguintes descritores: “aromaterapia” e “menopausa”. Foram considerados apenas ensaios clínicos publicados no período de 2011 a 2021 e nos idiomas inglês e português. Resultados: No total, cinquenta e três artigos foram encontrados a partir da busca dos descritores e, de acordo com os critérios de elegibilidade, foram selecionados onze estudos para esta pesquisa. Todos os estudos consideraram como intervenção a prática da aromaterapia e evidenciaram a redução dos sintomas indesejados da menopausa. Discussão: Com base nos resultados encontrados, observa-se que em todos os ensaios clínicos analisados, a aromaterapia parece ser eficaz em diminuir os sintomas decorrentes da menopausa. Conclusão: A aromaterapia pode ser eficaz em diminuir os sintomas da menopausa e, portanto, pode melhorar a saúde, o bem-estar e a qualidade de vida das mulheres menopausadas. Contudo, a amostra dos ensaios clínicos analisados foi limitada e os efeitos foram analisados a curto prazo, sendo necessários estudos em maior escala no futuro.
