RESUMO:O período da escravidão é entendido por intelectuais brasileiros entre os séculos XIX e XX, como um momento "torpe" da nossa história, reconfigurada, porém, essa visão ainda persiste, no período pós-escravocrata. Dentre estas, destaca-se a de Manoel Bomfim (1868-1932) e o seu "A América Latina: males de origens" (1905). Bomfim argumenta que o trabalho escravo, implantado na América do Sul, pelas metrópoles Ibéricas, estava estreitamente ligado ao processo parasitário dessas nações. A tese do "parasitismo social" é central na obra desse autor, pois é a partir dela que ele elabora uma interpretação ancorada nas noções de 'dominador' e 'dominado', tendo a ela subjacente a idéia de compreender os processos formadores da nacionalidade dessas sociedades. A condição imposta pelo trabalho escravo gerou efeitos desastrosos a essas nações, trazendo à baila implicações históricas perniciosas a sua "vida econômica, política, social e moral", pois, a esses indivíduos, era negada a realização de um "trabalho inteligente", na medida em que não se proporcionou uma educação para a criação de uma "população agrícola rural, ativa, laboriosa, educada e fortalecida pelo trabalho". O argumento central deste artigo é o fato de que esses "efeitos gerais" causados pelo "parasitismo" influenciaram o descompasso existente entre as nações Sul-Américas e as nações denominadas "adiantadas", sendo a educação o diagnóstico que minimizaria esse hiato. RESUMOEste artigo tem como objetivo compreender, a partir da atuação de João Pereira de Castro Pinto e Carlos Dias Fernandes, os mecanismos de ação política e de sociabilidade lançados por esses sujeitos, cujas estratégias privilegiaram a educação como locus fulcral do processo de modernidade. As fontes utilizadas neste estudo foram: as mensagens dos presidentes do estado da Parahyba, os verbetes biográficos, as matérias do jornal A União e as cartas trocadas entre os intelectuais. Castro Pinto concebeu mudanças necessárias para a modernidade do estado a partir da maturação da necessidade de reformas que envolvessem a cidade e a educação, as quais deveriam introduzir novos hábitos e comportamentos no povo. O retorno de Carlos Dias Fernandes ao estado da Parahyba fez parte das reformas empreendidas pelo governo de Castro Pinto. A imprensa oficial, desse modo, assumiu função pedagógica através da circulação de notícias, publicação de novos livros e incentivo à intelectualidade local. Carlos Dias Fernandes desempenhou papel de destaque no cenário cultural local mediante a interlocução das ideias que circulavam nacionalmente e foi representado como mestre da juventude do estado. INTELLECTUAL SOCIABILITY NETWORKS AND EDUCATION: PERFORMANCE OF CASTRO PINTO AND CARLOS DIAS FERNANDES AT THE FIRST REPUBLIC. ABSTRACT This article aims to comprehend, from the actions of João Pereira de Castro Pinto and Carlos Dias Fernandes, the mechanisms of political action and sociability released by these individuals, whose strategies gives priority to education as the central locus of the modernity process. The main sources used in this study are: the messages of the presidents of the state of Parahyba, the biographical record cards, the articles of the newspaper A União and the letters exchanged between the intellectuals. Castro Pinto conceived the need of changes to the modernity of the state as from the maturation of the necessity of reforms that entails the city and the education, which must introduce new habits and behaviors to the people. The return of Carlos Dias Fernandes to the state of Parahyba was part of the reforms undertaken by the government of Castro Pinto. In this way, the official press had assumed a pedagogical function through the circulation of news, the publication of new books and the encouragement for local intellectuals. Carlos Dias Fernandes played a prominent role in the local cultural scene through the interchange of ideas that circulated nationally and he was represented as a master of the youth of the state.
As mulheres, na virada do século XIX para século XX, começaram a protagonizar o debate público brasileiro. Nísia Floresta traduziu e publicou “O Direito das Mulheres e injustiça dos Homens”, em 1832, o escrito da inglesa, Mary Wollstonecraft, originalmente intitulado de “Vindication Of The Rights Of Woman”, em 1792. Na Parahyba do Norte, em 1913, Catharina Moura, em conferência pública na Universidade Popular, proclamou discurso com igual título, retomando as teses defendidas pelas suas antecessoras. O objetivo desse trabalho é compreender o projeto educacional proposto pelas mulheres intelectuais que participaram do debate público, particularmente, o da Catharina Moura. As fontes utilizadas são os jornais e revistas do período que foram suporte da escrita dessas mulheres, mais especificamente, o jornal parahybano, A União. Como referencial teórico-metodológico foi utilizado a História dos Intelectuais que auxilia a compreender a trajetória, a geração e as redes de sociabilidades que atravessaram a vida dessas mulheres, bem como a participação delas e as ideias que propagavam no debate público do período. Nesse sentido, é possível concluir que as mulheres atuaram como intelectuais se posicionando em favor da emancipação feminina pela via da educação escolar e cultural. Catharina Moura fez parte da tradição de mulheres escritoras e engajadas do período, defendendo a igualdade de oportunidades entre homens e mulheres nas mais diversas profissões e também destacando a legitimidade do voto feminino.
Esse artigo aborda elementos que envolvem os debates referentes à instituição de uma Universidade Popular no estado da Paraíba no início da década de 1910 durante o governo de João Pereira de Castro Pinto. A discussão será apresentada a partir da análise de fontes impressas como as Mensagens Presidenciais, as Atas da Câmara dos Deputados e os artigos publicados no Jornal A União. A ideia de uma Universidade Popular, inspirada em um modelo europeu, ao Brasil, foi introduzida embora tenha passado por uma reestruturação no contexto local. Instituída no Rio de Janeiro, no início do século XX, era destinada à disseminação do pensamento anarquista/socialista para as camadas de trabalhadores. Na Parahyba, Castro Pinto a propôs com o objetivo de afastar essa classe dos perigos das teorias externas. Fundada na Parahyba em 1913, a Universidade Popular teve como o seu público alvo não apenas operários, mas também alunos do Lyceu e toda a intelectualidade parahybana. Tratou-se de iniciativa breve, mas inovadora, que acabou atraindo e envolvendo o público local e diversos personagens em torno de temáticas educativas como higiene, instrução pública e voto.
