Preparation of medicinal plants for experimental purposes is an initial step and key in achieving quality research outcome. It involves extraction and determination of quality and quantity of bioactive constituents before proceeding with the intended biological testing. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate various methods used in the preparation and screening of medicinal plants in our daily research. Although the extracts, bioactive fractions, or compounds obtained from medicinal plants are used for different purposes, the techniques involved in producing them are generally the same irrespective of the intended biological testing. The major stages included in acquiring quality bioactive molecule are the selection of an appropriate solvent, extraction methods, phytochemical screening procedures, fractionation methods, and identification techniques. The nitty-gritty of these methods and the exact road map followed solely depends on the research design. Solvents commonly used in extraction of medicinal plants are polar solvent (e.g., water, alcohols), intermediate polar (e.g., acetone, dichloromethane), and nonpolar (e.g., n-hexane, ether, chloroform). In general, extraction procedures include maceration, digestion, decoction, infusion, percolation, Soxhlet extraction, superficial extraction, ultrasound-assisted, and microwave-assisted extractions. Fractionation and purification of phytochemical substances are achieved through application of various chromatographic techniques such as paper chromatography, thin-layer chromatography, gas chromatography, and high-performance liquid chromatography. Finally, compounds obtained are characterized using diverse identification techniques such as mass spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet spectroscopy, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Subsequently, different methods described above can be grouped and discussed according to the intended biological testing to guide young researchers and make them more focused.

Ratio-dependent predator-prey models are increasingly favored by both the theoretical and experimental ecologists as a more suitable alternative to describe predator-prey interactions when the predators hunt seriously. In this article, the classical Bazykin's model is modified with ratio-dependent functional response. Stability and bifurcation situations of the system are observed. Since the ratio-dependent model always has difficult dynamics in the vicinity of the origin, the analytical behavior of the system near origin is studied completely. It is found that paradox of enrichment can happen to this system under certain parameter values, although the functional response is ratio-dependent. The parametric space for Turing spatial structure is determined. We also conclude that competition among the predator population might be beneficial for predator species under certain circumstances. Finally, ecological interpretations of our results are presented in the discussion section.

Bomb or explosion-blast injuries are likely to be increasingly encountered as terrorist activity increases and pre-hospital medical care improves. We therefore reviewed the epidemiology, pathophysiology and treatment of primary blast lung injury. In addition to contemporary military publications and expert recommendation, an EMBASE and MEDLINE search of English speaking journals was undertaken using the medical subject headings (MeSHs) ‘blast injury’ and ‘lung injury’. Review articles, retrospective case series, and controlled animal modelling studies published since 2000 were evaluated. 6-11% of military casualties in recent conflicts have suffered primary blast lung injury but the incidence increases to more than 90% in terrorist attacks occurring in enclosed spaces such as trains. The majority of victims require mechanical ventilation and intensive care management. Specific therapies do not exist and treatment is supportive utilizing current best practice. Understanding the consequences and supportive therapies available to treat primary blast lung injury are important for anaesthetists.

SUMMARYA predator-prey model with transmissible disease in the prey species is proposed and analysed. The essential mathematical features are analysed with the help of equilibrium, local and global stability analyses and bifurcation theory. We find four possible equilibria. One is where the populations are extinct. Another is where the disease and predator populations are extinct and we find conditions for global stability of this. A third is where both types of prey exist but no predators. The fourth has all three types of individuals present and we find conditions for limit cycles to arise by Hopf bifurcation. Experimental data simulation and brief discussion conclude the paper.

SUMMARYWe propose a ratio-dependent demographic predator-prey model in which also a disease spreads among predators via homogeneous mixing. Equilibria of the system are analysed, numerical evidence shows limit cycles to arise. The disease effects on the model are discussed. Comparisons of these findings with results of some related investigations allow the general conclusion that an infection in either species, prey or predator, may act as a biological control.
