CT-guided FNAC is an important method in which aspiration of materials done from deep structure of the body. Now a day, it is a useful tool for diagnosis of lung lesion. This study was done in the department of Pathology, Khwaja Yunus Ali Medical College & Hospital (KYAMCH), a rural tertiary hospital in Bangladesh. A total of 330 cases from January 2008 to December 2013 were evaluated in this study. Of these, 93 (28.20%) were adenocarcinoma, 66 (20%) were squamous cell carcinoma, 35(10.6%) were small cell carcinoma, 31 (9.4%) were non-small cell carcinoma, 03 (0.9%) were non-hodgkin lymphoma, 57 (17.3%) were inflammatory, 24 (7.3%) were tuberculosis and others were 21 (6.4%). The mean age±SD of patients was 58.92±12.92 years. Incidence of malignancy was quite similar in compare to previous study. So in case of any suspicious lesion or growth of lung, CT- guided FNAC should be done for diagnosis and also to exclude malignancy that will help to reduce patients' morbidity and mortality.KYAMC Journal Vol. 6, No.-1, Jul 2015, Page 562-564
Tuberculosis remains a major threat to world health. The main aim of this study was to improve the microscopic detection of AFB from sputum by Bleach sedimentation technique using household bleach. This was a cross sectional type of study conducted for a period of one year from July 2010 to June 2011 in the Department of Laboratory Services, Khwaja Yunus Ali Medical College Hospital (KYAMCH), Sirajgonj. A total of 115 clinically suspected tuberculosis patients aged between 7-85 years were included in the study. Among them 35 (30.4%) patients had TB positive by routine (Direct microscopy) method; whereas, by bleach concentration method 42 (36.5%) were found positive; diagnosing 07 additional patients. The rise of 16.7% in sputum positivity by bleach sedimentation microscopy over the direct smear microscopy was found to be statistically significant (p= <0.005). Paired samples t test analysis of sputum showed a significant correlation between this two methods (r=0.896, p <0.001). This study suggests that Bleach sedimentation method is better than direct conventional method. So it should be applied to all laboratories across the country because it is cheap early available and also safety to the laboratory staffs.KYAMC Journal Vol. 5, No.-2, Jan 2015, Page 497-502
Examination of biopsy specimens is necessary to find out the diagnosis. To detect the spectrum of histopathological findings in surgically resected specimens sent in the department of Pathology, Khwaja Yunus Ali Medical College & Hospital (KYAMCH), a rural tertiary hospital in Bangladesh. A total of 1329 specimens from January 2013 to December 2013 were evaluated in this study. Among these, 444 (33.4%) were malignant, 226 (17.0%) were benign, 29 (2.2%) were precancerous, 481 (36.2%) were inflammatory, 14 (1.1%) were tuberculosis, 12 (.9%) were suppurative lesion and 25 (1.9%) were inadequate for diagnosis. The mean age±SE of patients was 42.28±1.68 years. Incidence of malignancy was higher in compare to previous study. It indicates the importance of histopathology for diagnosis and also to exclude malignancy. So any suspicious growth should be excised as early as possible and sent for histopathology. This will help to reduce patients' morbidity and mortality.KYAMC Journal Vol. 5, No.-1, Jul 2014, Page 449-452
Background: Lymphadenopathy is a common clinical condition in Bangladesh and histopathological examination is important for diagnosis. Objectives: The aim of this study was to detect pattern of benign and malignant conditions of lymphadenopathy. Methods: This study was done in the department of Pathology, Khwaja Yunus Ali Medical College & Hospital (KYAMCH), a rural tertiary hospital in Bangladesh. A total of 420 lymph node biopsies from January 2013 to December 2015 were included. Results: Among these, 208 (49.5%) were metastatic carcinoma, followed by non-specific lymphadenitis 116 (27.6%), non-hodgkin lymphoma 48 (11.4%) and tuberculosis 35 (8.3%). The mean age±SD of patients was 44.82±15.42 years. Incidence of malignancy was quite higher in compare to previous studies. Conclusion: In case of any suspicious lymphadenopathy, histopathology should be done for diagnosis and also to exclude malignancy that will help to reduce patients' morbidity and mortality.KYAMC Journal Vol. 8, No.-1, Jul 2017, Page 49-52
