Background: Breast illumination was suggested as a simple method for breast cancer screening. BreastLight is a simple apparatus for this purpose. Objective: To evaluate the diagnostic performance of BreastLight as a screening tool of breast cancer in comparison to mammography and histopathology. Materials and Methods: This hospital-based cross sectional study was conducted in the mammography unit of the radiodiagnosis department at National Cancer Institute, Cairo University. All participants were subjected to breast examination with the BreastLight tool, mammography and ultrasonography. Suspicious cases were biopsied for histopathological examination which is considered as a gold standard. Results: The mean age of the participants was 46.3±12.4 years. Breast illumination method had sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value and total accuracy of 93.0%, 73.7%, 91.4%, 77.8% and 88.2%, respectively in detection of breast cancer. Conclusions: Breast illumination method with BreastLight apparatus is a promising easy-to-use tool to screen for breast cancer suitable for primary health care physician or at-home use. It needs further evaluation especially in asymptomatic women.
Background Patient safety is critical component of health care quality. We aimed to assess the awareness of primary healthcare staff members about patient safety culture and explore the areas of deficiency and opportunities for improvement concerning this issue. Methods: This descriptive cross sectional study surveyed 369 staff members in four primary healthcare centers in Kuwait using self-administered “Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture” adopted questionnaire. The total number of respondents was 276 participants (response rate = 74.79%). Results: Five safety dimensions with lowest positivity (less than 50%) were identified and these are; the non – punitive response to errors, frequency of event reporting, staffing, communication openness, center handoffs and transitions with the following percentages of positivity 24%, 32%, 41%, 45% and 47% respectively. The dimensions of highest positivity were teamwork within the center’s units (82%) and organizational learning (75%). Conclusion: Patient safety culture in primary healthcare settings in Kuwait is not as strong as improvements for the provision of safe health care. Well-designed patient safety initiatives are needed to be integrated with organizational policies, particularly the pressing need to address the bioethical component of medical errors and their disclosure, communication openness and emotional issues related to them and investing the bright areas of skillful organizational learning and strong team working attitudes.
Background: Primary Health Care (PHC) services underutilization was the main finding all over Egypt including Sharkia Governorate and social marketing campaign was a successful method to promote the use of such services. Aim & Objectives: The aim of this work is to maximize the utilization of PHC curative services with the following objectives: (1) to design and implement a tailored social marketing campaign in an urban area in Sharkia Governorate.(2) to assess the effect of this campaign on the rate of utilization of PHC curative services in the same urban area in Sharkia Governorate. Subjects & Methods: An intervention study in the form of six months social marketing campaign that was conducted in El-Ebrahemia City, Sharkia Governorate to promote the utilization of El-Ebrahemia Family Health Center (FHC) curative services. This campaign included internal and external marketing seminars, dissemination of promotional materials with participation of EL-Ebrahemia health district, the mosques leaders and the volunteers in its implementation. The evaluation was done through comparing the service output indicators and the households surveys results before and after campaign using Paired t test and McNamar test. Results: The campaign was able to increase the utilization of the studied households of all curative services especially 1st aid service from 0% to 17.6%. This was also accompanied with corresponding increase in the service output indicators during and after the campaign. Conclusion: Social marketing was an effective intervention to promote the utilization of El-Ebrahemia FHC curative services. Based on the results, it is recommended that the use of social marketing activities is an essential step to mobilize the served community to utilize PHC services.
The current study aimed to assess mobile phone usage intensity and evaluate potential oxidative stress exerted among mobile users then evaluate the effect of antioxidants supplement on oxidative stress status. Intervention study done on 150 students using mobile phones from both technical nursing institute and faculty of nursing, Cairo .University. Only ( 108) students completed to the post intervention phase. Questionnaire and assessment of electromagnetic field exposure from mobile phones was done. Malondialdyde, superoxide dismutase and catalase were measured pre and post supplementation. Mobile phones with two SIM cards, non-android mobiles and mobile phones owned by the medium users group had significant higher electromagnetic emissions. Malondialdyde was significant higher in high mobile users. Significant negative correlation between emissions from mobile phone and superoxide dismutase. After supplementation, significant improvement in superoxide dismutase and Catalase among both groups using mobiles (>5years and <5years), using one or two phones, using one or two SIM cards and in android mobile users. Moreover, Malondialdyde show significant reduction among non-android mobile users. It was concluded that exposure to low emissions from mobile phones could be fixed by dietary modification and increase antioxidant intake.
