Los niveles de pobreza de un importante porcentaje de la población de muchos países en desarrollo se acompañan, con frecuencia, de la falta de acceso a productos de ahorro, pago, crédito o seguro, lo que determina una exclusión financiera. Aquí se presenta el proyecto de cajas de ahorro auspiciado por la Fundación León XIII en México. Tras describirse esta experiencia informal de fomento del ahorro, se presentan los datos de una encuesta realizada entre 218 beneficiarios del proyecto. Su análisis bivariante y multivariante, además de cuantificar las condiciones de vida de sus beneficiarios, proporciona valiosa información acerca de la capacidad de ahorro que la población logra a través de esta iniciativa, segmentando a sus beneficiarios por sus características y esfuerzo ahorrador.
RESUMENEl movimiento cooperativo vivió en el año 2012 un impulso renovado con la celebración del Año Internacional de las Cooperativas de Naciones Unidas (ONU), siendo su objetivo fomentar y dar visibilidad al papel que juegan las cooperativas en el desarrollo. En este trabajo, se presentan los resultados cualitativos de las entrevistas realizadas a expertos del sector en el ámbito internacional siguiéndose la metodología Delphi, con la que se recaban valoraciones expertas de la situación y retos del movimiento en distintos países, de los logros de la celebración ese Año Internacional y de las posibilidades de cumplimiento de los objetivos marcados para la próxima década por las organizaciones representativas del sector a nivel internacional.
ABSTRACTThe cooperative movement in 2012 experienced a renewed impulse with the celebration of the International Year of Cooperatives of the United Nations (UN), being its aim to promote and to give visibility to the role of cooperatives in development. Qualitative results are presented in this paper collected from the interviews with experts in the sector from different countries following the Delphi methodology, allowing to gather their assessments of the situation and challenges of the cooperative movement in their respective countries, starting from the achievements of the celebration and the possibility to achieve the objectives set for the next decade by international organizations representing the sector.
ResumenEn este trabajo se describe la dimensión e importancia del cooperativismo agroalimentario a nivel europeo, abordando la asimetría de escala que se da dentro de la cadena de valor entre sus actores comerciales en origen y en destino. La situación del movimiento cooperativo en el área mediterránea se aborda desde el estudio del caso de España, realizándose una descripción de sus principales estrategias de crecimiento e innovación. Pese a lo heterogéneo y atomizado de su estructura empresarial, el sector cooperativo nacional presenta altos niveles de competitividad, mostrando una elevada capacidad de adaptación a los requerimientos que los mercados le imponen en términos de escala, calidad o diferenciación de sus productos.Palabras clave: calidad, competitividad, cooperativismo agrario, diferenciación, España.

AbstractIn this paper the size and importance of agri-food cooperatives at European level is described by addressing the asymmetry of scale that occurs within value chain between their commercial actors at origin and destination. The situation of cooperative movement in the Mediterranean area is approached from the case study of Spain, performing a description of their main growth strategies and innovation. Despite the heterogeneous and fragmented its business structure, the national cooperative sector has high levels of competitiveness, showing high adaptability to the requirements that markets will impose in terms of scale, quality and product differentiation.
