The distribution of selected critical elements in the sedimentary rocks of the Carboniferous coal‐bearing series within the Polish Coal Basins is presented. Critical elements such as Be, Mg, Si, P, Sc, V, Co, Y, Nb, In, Sb, La, Ce, Hf, Ta, W, Bi were analysed using inductively‐coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP/MS). Concentrations of elements such as Sb, Bi, In and, to a slightly lesser extent, Nb, as well as Sc, show average concentrations higher than those from the upper continental crust. The average concentrations of elements like Hf, Mg, P, Y, La, and Ce are slightly lower than in the upper continental crust. Other elements, such as Be, Co, Si, Ta, W and V have average concentrations that are similar, but slightly enriched or slightly depleted, relative to the upper continental crust. The research showed enrichment of some critical elements in the analysed samples, but not high enough that extraction would be economically viable. Statistical methods, which include correlation coefficients between elements and cluster analysis, reveal a strong positive correlation between elements like Be, Bi, Nb, Sc, Ta, W and V. Very high, almost total, positive correlation is also noted between La and Ce.
CHANGES IN THE CONCENTRATION OF SOME RARE EARTH ELEMENTS IN COAL WASTE ZMIANY KONCENTRACJI WYBRANYCH PIERWIASTKÓW ZIEM RZADKICH (REEs) W ODPADACH WĘGLOWYCHCoal waste is formed during coal mining and processing operations. That waste comprises mainly sedimentary rocks that occur in roofs and floors of underground workings and in partings in coal seams. It contains numerous trace elements, including rare earth elements (REEs). Hypergenic processes that take place in coal waste piles may lead to endogenous fires. Thermal transformations of waste have an effect on changes in its phase and chemical composition, including the concentration of trace elements. The paper presents changes in the content of selected rare earth elements (Sc, Y, La, Ce, Nd, Sm, Eu, Tb, Yb, Lu ) in wastes of varying degree of thermal transformation. The results of REE content determination in lump samples were subjected to statistical analysis and coefficients of correlation between the studied rare earth elements and the main chemical constituents were determined. The primary carriers of REEs in coal waste are clay minerals. Phase transformations that take place at high temperatures (including dehydroxylation of clay minerals and formation of minerals characteristic of contact metamorphism) cause changes in the concentration of rare earth elements. Keywords: Rare Earth Elements (REEs), post mining waste, coal wastes, thermal transformations Odpady powęglowe powstają w wyniku eksploatacji oraz przeróbki węgla kamiennego. Wyniki oznaczeń zawartości REEs w próbkach kawałkowych poddano analizie statystycznej i wyznaczono współczynniki korelacji pomiędzy badanymi pierwiastkami ziem rzadkich a głównymi składnikami chemicznymi.Pierwotnym nośnikiem REEs w odpadach powęglowych są minerały ilaste. The paper presents the results of geochemical analyses of samples from the Poruba Beds of the paralic series and from the Zaleskie Beds of the limnic series Upper Silesian Coal Basin (USCB). The contents of the following trace elements and oxides were evaluated using spectrometric method: Cr, Th, U, V, AL2O3, MgO, K2O, P2O5. The following indicators, most commonly used in chemostratigraphy and in the identification of the marine and non-marine sediments ratios, were analyzed: U, Th, Th/U, K2O, Th/K2O, P2O5, Al2O3, P2O5/ Al2O3, V, Cr, V/Cr, and (K2O/Al2O3) / (MgO/Al2O3). The research showed that those ratios may be used to identify sedimentary environments and geochemical correlations of the sedimentary rock sequences in the USCB. Geochemical ratios discussed in the paper allowed distinguishing two populations of samples representing paralic and limnic series.
Pb, As, Ga, B, Co, Ge, Be, Li, Cd, Ag, Sr - w kolejności malejącego udziału). Znaczna część pierwiastków wykazała wysoki i często dominujący udział w iłowcach. Stwierdzono także regionalne zróżnicowanie zawartości pierwiast- ków śladowych w skałach. Badania korelacji pomiędzy zawartością pierwiastków śladowych a zawartością głównych mine- rałów w skałach potwierdziły powinowactwo wielu pierwiastków śladowych z substancją organiczną, minerałami ilastymi i węglanami. Zwraca uwagę występowanie korelacji licznych pierwiastków śladowych z substancją organiczną (węglem) przy stosunkowo niewielkiej liczbie pierwiastków korelujących z minerałami ilastymi.
The growing demand for rare-earth elements and yttrium (REY) in modern technologies has resulted in the systematic depletion of primary ores. For this reason, research is being conducted around the world on alternative sources of rare-earth elements, e.g., on the possibilities of recovering REY from coal waste or coal combustion. The article presents the results of comprehensive tests of the fuel—hard coal, and high-temperature HTA ash, fly ash, and bottom ash. Examined samples were taken from a Polish power plant. In the tests, fuel quality parameters were determined in accordance with the standards; microscopic observations in reflected and transmitted light, as well as a scanning electron microscope (SEM/EDS), were used, and chemical and phase composition were determined using ICP-MS and XRD methods, respectively. The distribution of REY between these ashes was analyzed. Their suitability as alternative sources of REY was assessed. The obtained results showed that the process of hard coal combustion in pulverized coal boilers influenced the geochemical differentiation of REY elements in energy waste. This differentiation is manifested by higher concentrations of REY and critical elements in the fly ash than in the bottom ash. The obtained values of the Coutl prospective coefficient made it possible to classify the analyzed fly and bottom ashes as prospective REY raw materials.
