Purpose In the last decade, graduates’ employability has assumed a central role in scholars’ concerns. This was mainly due the high rate of recent graduates’ unemployment in some European countries, as well as the Bologna Process reform of the European higher education system and the new Europe Strategy 2020. The purpose of this paper, driven by the increasing need to improve graduates’ skills and employability, is to identify a set of skills that students consider important to achieve success in their own field of study and another set of skills, which they perceive to lack the most. Design/methodology/approach To achieve the main goal of this study, based on the methodology supported by literature review, a questionnaire was applied to students from five different European universities. Findings The main results allowed the authors to infer that, on the one hand, the European students of the universities included in the study consider communication, thinking and interpersonal skills as the most important skills to get a job in their own field of study; and on the other hand, personal, interpersonal and entrepreneurial skills are the skills lacked by students. These set of skills are quite similar and even overlapping, which makes this a significant inference that needs to be accounted by higher education institutions (HEIs). Originality/value In the research carried out in this study, with the students of five different European universities affected by the economic crisis of 2007/2008, the needed skills perceived by students to obtain employment in their own field of study were identified, along with the skills which they perceived to lack the most. The obtained findings contribute to shed light on the important issue of supporting HEIs regarding the skills that should be imparted in the curricula of their courses and workshops, in order to help the students to succeed in the current and potential competitive labour market.
Workplace bullying takes place in many organizations and it has serious consequences on individuals, organizations and economy. The main aim of this study is to contribute to the field of workplace bullying by empirically testing the theoretically defined relation between socio-organizational variables (organizational culture and ethical climate) and bullying, using two theoretical models well-grounded in organizational studies. The findings, from a sample of 984 Portuguese workers, suggest that there is a strong relation between organizational culture/ethical climate and bullying: the "benevolent" and "principled" climates are negatively related (or even an obstacle) to bullying, as well as the cultural orientation of "support". The opposite is the result of the climate "self-interest" and the cultural orientations of "rules" and "goals". As organizational culture and ethical climate explain 20% of the variance of the negative behaviours perceived by the members of the organization, what shows that managers can achieve changes to a significant organizational, individual and societal problem just by manipulating those two variables.
A amostra envolveu 278 estudantes universitários portugueses. Palavras-chave: trabalhadores seniores, discriminação etária, envelhecimento, relações entre gerações Attitudes towards Older Workers: The Perspective of University StudentsABSTRACT -We seek to understand (a) if the penta-dimensional structure (dimensions: adaptability, value of older people to the organization, conscientiousness and loyalty; capital and generosity; performance) of the measuring instrument of managers' attitudes towards older workers previously developed is replicated in a sample of university students and (b) whether these attitudes help to explain the decisions of students. The sample involved 278 university students. The main results are the following: (a) the penta-dimensional structure obtained with Portuguese and Brazilian managers is replicated in the sample of students; (b) although students recognize qualities in older workers, they tend to reveal discriminatory practices with respect to such employees, and those practices appear to be more pronounced than those observed with managers.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
