Surface water´s quality and trophic status assessment in the Arari River (Marajo Island, Northern Brazil) abstRaCtThe deterioration of the water quality may be caused either by the result of human pressure on aquatic environments in larger scales, or by natural factors in smaller scales, such as part of the Arari River basin (Marajó Island, Pará state, Brazil) .This work aimed to evaluate the surface water´s quality and the trophic state of the Arari River, between Santana and Cachoeira do Arari localities, taking into account the seasonal and spatial variations of physical, chemical and biological parameters in two different hydrological periods in 2009: the maximum discharge (April to May) and minimum discharge (September to November). The Water Quality Index (WQI) and Trophic State Index (TSI) were determined simultaneously in water surface's samples collected during 12 consecutive hours in three stations along the Arari River. The WQI data ranged from "Poor" and "Regular" and are probably related to the high levels of fecal coliform, low concentrations of dissolved oxygen and acid pH of the Arari River. Regards the TSI, the river may be classified as "supereutrophic" and "hipereutrophic", indicating the wide availability of nutrients (e.g. phosphorus) and high phytoplankton biomass in terms of chlorophyll a content. The Arari River is under a natural eutrophication, since the sources of anthropic contamination are still incipient, although they may contribute...
The Bragança Coastal Plain is located in the Northeastern of Pará, in the Bragança-Viseu CoaxialBasin (Cretaceous), with an approximate surface area of 1,570 Km2. The geometry of the basin and itspaleotopography, associated with recent tectonic movements have controlled the distribution and thethickness of the tertiary and quaternary deposits. This coastal plain constitutes a macrotidal (6 m) depositionalsystem, developed in a hot and humid equatorial climate, with a dry and wet well defined seasons and anannual precipitation averaging 3,000 mm.The geomorphology of the area is subdivided into three main morphologic realms: (1) alluvial plain, with fluvial channel, levees and flood plain; (2) estuarine plain, with an estuarine channel subdivided intoestuarine funnel segment, straight segment, meandering segment and upstream channel, tidal creek and, floodplain and; (3) coastal plain, with salt marsh (inner and outer), tidal plain (supratidal mangroves, intertidal mangroves and sand flats with tidal shoals), chenier, coastal dunes and beach environments. The recent morpho-sedimentary units are separated from highland by a line of inactive cliffs that issituated 25 km from the coastline. This cliffs mark the higher Holocene sea level, very well knowed inbrazilian east coast as Holocenic Transgression (5,100 years B.P.). During this event was deposited a basaltransgressive sequence (S1), constituted by estuarine sand and mud and marine sand. Afterwards, underregressive or stillstand sea level the mangrove deposits prograde over the transgressive sand sheet buildinga prograding sequence (S2). Nowadays, this sequence are being overlain by a recent transgressive sequence(S3).The sedimentary model, based on lithostratigraphy and sedimentary processes, proposed to BragançaCoastal Plain show a complex coastal depositional system, constituted by different sedimentaryenvironments with singular sedimentary, stratigraphic and morphologic characteristics in relation to itsgeometry and spacial distribution of the environments. The morpho-sedimentary unit show that the environments studied from the alluvial plain to coastalplain represent a dynamic area dominated by macrotides and influenced by waves along the shoreline. Therefore, the depositional model proposed is composed by a coastal plain depositional system withfluvial-estuarine-tidal flat environments with dune-beach ridge associated.
Seismicity due to the compressional motion in North Africa has an important effect on the stability of the sediments on the Algerian continental slope. The 1954 earthquake induced a large turbidity current that cut many telephone cables. Results of the 1980 EI-Asnam earthquake on sliding of slope deposits are not well documented, mainly because there were fewer cables than in the past. Nevertheless in the Bay of Alger, 200 km from the epicentre, a telephone cable was broken by a small turbidity current. This current reached a velocity of about 45 km/h.
The area can be subdivided into three main geomorphologic compartments: (1) alluvial plain, with fluvial channels, levees and flood plain; (2) estuarine plain, with an estuarine channel subdivided into estuarine funnel segment, straight segment, meandering segment and upstream channel and; (3) coastal plain, with salt marshes (inner and outer), tidal flats (supratidal mangroves, intertidal mangroves and sandy tidalflats), chenier sand ridges, coastal dunes, barrier-beach ridges and ebb-tidal delta environments. The Braganfa coastal zone is an active sedimentary region, which has been developed largely since the higher Holocene sea level (5,100 years BP). It has been concluded, based on geomorphology, lithostratigraphy and sedimentary processes, which the coastal plain has evolved from mangrove progradatipn, protected by dune-beach ridges with associated fluvial-estuarine-tidal channels. Therefore, the sedimentary model shows a complex depositional system, which is influenced by a broad tidal range. Keywords: Coastal geomorphology, macro tidalflat, mangrove, remote sensing, Northern Brazil.INTRODUCTION Geomorphology is the science concerned with relationship between landforms and the processes currently acting on them (Summerfield 1991). Coastal zone environments are products of many complex interacting processes (transport, erosion and deposition) which continually modify rocks and sediments. According to Summerfield (1991), coastal zones are broad and reach from the landward limit of marine processes to the seaward limit of alluvial and shoreline processes. Therefore, coastal zone is the region between continental and marine environments where occur estuaries, deltas, tidal flats, salt marshes, barrier islands, cheniers, beaches and other coastal landforms. In the Northeastern part of the State of Pará (Amazon Region) the coastal environments are dominated by macrotidal systems (6m ranges). The dominant geomorphologic features usually consist of wide muddy tidal flats (mangroves) with estuaries, shoals, salt marshes, cheniers, dunes, beaches and associated washover deposits (Silva 1996, Souza Filho andEl-Robrini 1996).The morphology and sedimentary facies of coastal environments are the product of interactions between relative sea levels, coastal processes and sediment supply. Tidal coastal plains develop under conditions of rising sea-level (transgressive coasts) or stable or falling sea-level (prograding coasts) in response to different combinations of sea-level changes history (Dalrymple et al. 1992). These settings are responsible for landward migration of the shoreline (transgression) and seaward migration of the shoreline (regression) and may be identified by geomorphologic mapping. Therefore, the recognition of shoreline deposits may be crucial to understand the sea-level changes and the stratigraphic sequence (Reading and Collinson 1996). The purpose of this study was to investigate the coastal zone geomorphology of Braganga plain to add to the understanding of the coastal evolution.
