Patients with social skills deficits such as problems with communication with other people, social withdrawal, problems with activities of daily living should be offered to social skills training. Patients with schizophrenia usually have social skills deficits. Social skills training is a set of systematic techniques and strategies useful for teaching interpersonal skills that are based on social learning theory. It is a widely used treatment of a range of psychiatric disorders as schizophrenia. The aim of this study was to examine the effectiveness of social skill training program on self-esteem, depression and interpersonal difficulties among schizophrenic patients. Design: Quasiexperimental design (one group pretest posttest design) was used to achieve the aim of the study. Setting: The study was conducted at The Psychiatric Hospital in Tanta and the Psychiatric Hospital in Mit-Khalf at Menoufyia, Egypt. Sample: A convince sample (50) was selected in the chosen setting inpatient department. Tools: four tools were used for data collection. Tool one: a structured: sociodemographic questionnaire to obtain demographic data about the studied sample. Tool two: The depression, anxiety and stress scale (DASS).In this paper the researcher used the depression scale only which consists of 14 items in the form of rating scale. The depression scale assesses dysphoria, hopelessness, and devaluation of life, self-deprecation, and lack of interest and anhedonia. Tool three: SelfEsteem Inventory Scale: It evaluates attitudes of individuals toward themselves and consists of 25 items. Tool four: Relationship Scales Questionnaire. It consists of 13 items five points Likert-scale. The results: There is a highly significant reduction of the mean score of depressive symptoms and interpersonal difficulties at 0.001 while highly significant increase of the mean score of self-esteem at 0.001 post program than pre program. Conclusion: The social skills training program had a positive effect on interpersonal difficulties, depressive symptoms and self-esteem of the schizophrenic patients after receiving social skill training program. Recommendations: Generalized of social skill training program for all psychotic patients in hospital to improve their social competence and self-esteem.
Substance abuse is one of the most important social deviations, which is foundation of many social damages and problems at the community level. Every part of the substance abuser's life as social life, family life, work productivity, physical health and personal relationships is affected. Aim: The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of psycho-educational nursing program on social adjustment and self-esteem among substance abusers. Design: A quasiexperimental design (pre and posttest) was used to achieve the aim of the study. Setting: This study was conducted at the outpatient clinics for addiction at the Psychiatric Mental Health Hospital in Benha City, Qalubia Governorate, which is affiliated to General Secretariat of Mental Health in Egypt. Subject: A convenience sample of 40 substance abusers was included from the above setting for conduction of this study. Tools: Three tools were used for data collection. Tool 1-structured interview questionnaire was used to collect data about socio demographic and clinical characteristics of the studied sample. Tool 2-Social Adjustment scale (SAS) to assess social adjustment of different life domains among the studied sample. Tool 3-Self-esteem scale (SES) was used to assess self-esteem among the studied sample. Results: There was a highly statistically significant improvement in total score of social adjustment and total score of self-esteem between pre and post implementation of the program. Conclusion: The study demonstrated that psychoeducational nursing program had a positive effect on enhancement of social adjustment and selfesteem among substance abusers. Recommendations: A psycho educational program should be given for all substance abusers based on a treatment protocol during their hospitalization to enhance their self-esteem and social adjustment.
Background: Acne vulgaris is chronic inflammatory skin disease impacts on patient's physical and mental health. The aim of this study was to examine the psychological problems of adolescent related to acne vulgaris (depressive symptoms, body image and self-esteem). Descriptive correlational design was utilized to achieve the aim of this study. This study was conducted at the outpatient clinic of the Dermatological Hospital in Benha City. A convenience sample of 200 patients fulfilled the inclusion and exclusion criteria during the spring season were selected from the above setting. The study tools were composed of four Tools (1): Socio-Demographic and Clinical Data, Tool (2): Beck Depression Inventory Scale to measure depressive symptoms, Tools (3) Rosenberg Scale to assess self-esteem, Tool (4) Body Image Scale to measure body image. The results of the study revealed that there was a statistical significant relationship between acne vulgaris and depressive symptoms, body image and selfesteem. Based on the results of this study it was concluded that: Acne vulgaris influence negatively on patients' psychological status. The study recommended that: Psychological counseling should be integrated as nursing intervention for acne patients to improve their mood, self-esteem and body image.
