Viele Erkenntnisse zur Lutealphase wurden tierexperimentell gewonnen. Die Untersuchungen wurden haupt sächlich an Nagetieren, Schafen und Schweinen durchgeführt. Die Luteal phase unterscheidet sich jedoch schon deutlich zwischen diesen Spe zies. Erst recht kann es schwierig sein, diese Ergebnisse auf den Menschen zu übertragen. Einige Experimente wurden auch an humanen Granulosa luteinzellen durchgeführt oder an an deren Zellen des menschlichen Ovars. In die vorliegende Übersicht zur Lu tealphase sind Ergebnisse aus all die sen Spezies eingeflossen, und wo im mer möglich, wurde den Erkenntnis sen aus humanen Untersuchungen der Vorrang gegeben. Das heißt, dass nicht alle physiologischen Ereignisse, die hier beschrieben sind, auch so beim Menschen stattfinden müssen. Als Lutealphase bezeichnet man die Zeit zwischen dem Eisprung und dem Einsetzen der Menstruationsblutung 2 Wochen später. Zu Zyklusbeginn tritt eine Kohorte von Primordialfollikeln in das Wachstum ein. Jedoch nur 1 Follikel erreicht weitere Phasen der Reifung und wird dominant. Er entwickelt sich zu einem großen präovulatorischen Follikel. Dieser Follikel produziert hohe Mengen an Östra-diol. Durch eine positive Rückkopplung wird der LH-Anstieg ausgelöst. Er triggert die Ruptur des Follikels, und die Eizelle wird durch den Eisprung freigesetzt. Die präovulatorische LH-Ausschüttung, die in der Zyklusmitte stattfindet, initiiert die Umwandlung der Überreste des reifen Follikels in das Corpus luteum. Eine ausreichende LH-Wirkung ist Voraussetzung für einen voll funktionstüchtigen Gelbkörper. Des Weiteren muss eine ausgeprägte Neovaskularisation stattfinden.
