Проведено аналіз сучасних водно-гліколевих охолоджуючих рідин/антифризів для двигунів внутрішнього згоряння та деяких технічних теплоносіїв. Акцентовано увагу на фізико-хімічних властивостях гліколів (густина, температура замерзання, теплоємність, теплопровідність, в'язкість) та на можливість їх використання в різних машинах та механізмах. Показана залежність температури замерзання водно-гліколевих розчинів від їх концентрації. В залежності від металів (сплавів) для охолодження блоків циліндрів і радіаторів двигунів внутрішнього згорання (ДВЗ) проведено класифікацію із зазначенням сучасних інгібіторів корозії. Наведені органічні кислоти, які утворюються при окисненні гліколів різної хімічної природи в процесі їх довготривалої експлуатації. Зазначено, що кислотна корозія та утворення накипу на робочих поверхнях ДВЗ є основними негативними факторами, що сприяють зниженню потужності двигуна, збільшенню газових викидів продуктів згоряння ДВЗ в атмосферу та погіршенню стану навколишнього середовища. В залежності від хімічної складової проведено класифікацію інгібіторів, що використовуються, відповідно до їх міжнародного позначення: неорганічні -ІАТ (Inorganik Acid Technology); органічні (карбоксилатні) ОАТ (Organic Acid Technology); «гібридні» (змішані) -НОАТ (Hybrid Organic Acid Technology). Розглянуто токсикологічні та екологічні властивості охолоджуючих рідин (антифризів) залежно від складу водно-гліколевих сумішей. Підкреслено високу токсичність антифризів на основі етиленгліколю для довкілля і відсутність такої для антифризів на основі пропіленгліколю та гліцерину. Акцентується увага на можливості покращення фізико-хімічних (експлуатаційних) характеристик антифризів шляхом зміни основних (базових) компонентів водно-гліколевих сумішей, зміни їх співвідношення та введення нових ефективніших домішок.
